  3. Target services • Social Networking • Presence indicator with updates • SHOPPING/ ENTERTAINING – Advertisement • Commercial Broadcast • SMART ENVIRONMENT - Home/ Office (Device based) • Personalized machine confguration and Management (smart office or home) - no S/W downloads • HEALTH / Energy- Monitoring/Service • Large network machine type communication • Peer-aware Monitoring/Assistance • Public Safety • Support/Service • Hazard Notification • Public Emergency • TRAFFIC/TRANSPORTATION - Road/Train/Airport • Police/Public Helps • Roadside Assistance - Congestions, Accident (fast), Event Communication • Interactive Transportation Management

  4. Requirements • Especially for Emergencies : • Longer battery life • Relatively low rate • Simple HW • Relatively longer distance • Viability is more important than the transmission rate !

  5. Encoding • Discovery mode PHY • As simple as possible • Error detection and retransmission only • Reducing the decoder complexity • 8-bit CRC would be OK • Communication mode PHY • Optimized for low energy services • Error control coding • Adaptive to channel change • Multi-rate • Asymmetric topology

  6. Preamble • Purpose of preamble • Signal detection • AGC • synchronization • AFC : frequency synchronization • Symbol synchronization • Frame synchronization • Etc. • Preamble sequence candidates • CAZAC sequence • M-sequence • Barker code • Gold code • Etc.

  7. Example of transmitter structure • SHR : Common Preamble, SFD(mode) • PHR/PSDU : Discovery / Communication mode Communication mode information Error control coding Spreading/ scramble MUX Modulation Modulated Signal Add CRC Scramble Discovery mode information Preamble

  8. PHY parameters • Band candidates : Sub-1GHz, 2.4GHz • Data rate and Bandwidth • Discovery mode PHY • 50Kbps, 200KHz • Communication mode PHY • Multi-rate • Ex) 50/100/200/400 Kbps, 400 KHz
