Let us Introduce Ourselves! • Linda McConnell • G-T Resource Teacher and/or Coordinator for twenty-two years • Classroom teacher before becoming a coordinator • Now retire but works part-time at Independence School District as G-T Coordinator • Dana Eide • G-T Programming for thirteen years • Special Education for seven years • Currently serves as Curriculum Coordinator and G-T Coordinator at the Blair-Taylor School District Members of the Mississippi Valley Gifted and Talented Network. We share a sincere interest in Gifted Education.

  4. Our Objectives for today! By the end of this presentation, you will… • 1. Have least one lesson/idea you can use during an Intervention/Enrichment Block for your G-T students from the areas of reading, language, and/or math. • 2. Understand how we use networking to serve our G-T students. • 3. Have an opportunity to network with coordinators from schools near you.

  5. Who do you serve ? At Independence: students who score at the 90% or better on our universal assessment have a Teacher Recommendation students are re-evaluated using such tools as GPA, Universal Assessment results, and Teacher Recommendation.

  6. Blair-Taylor 90+% on universal screeners Teacher Recommendation Reading level 2-3 years above grade level

  7. Now that you know who needs G-T Enrichment options, what do you do? • 1. Leveled Readers • 2. Junior Great Books • 3. Battle of the Books • 4. Writing a Book • 5. Research project • 6. Spelling Bee • 7. Ipad Apps • 8. Stock Market Simulation • 9. Geography Bee

  8. Don’t be afraid to create your own materials. Start with the Common Core and move up grade levels. (standards.dpi.wi.gov/stn_ela-tchingandlrng) Example: 2nd grade Battle of the Books

G-T Network Enrichment • What is a network? • What is the value? • Network events reinforce RtI for upper elementary through high school. • 3rd Grade Creative Problem Solving Fair • 4th Grade Heritage Fair • 4-8 Creative Writing Event • 5-6 and 7-8 Grade Battle of the Books • 5th Grade Performing Arts Fair • 5-6 Grade Kid’s College • 6-8 Grade & High School Quiz Bowls • High School Creative Writing Festival • High School High Quiz Bowl • 4-8 Grade Spelling Bee

  10. Let’s talk about Math!! Ixl math – math enrichment program (www.ixlmath.com) Khan Academy – supplemental math program (www.khanacademy.org) Network Math Fair Event

  11. Grant writing can be a great way to empower students to try to make a positive difference in their own school. I love putting my G-T students in leadership roles and having them develop and write their project ideas into a grant. (It also makes them popular with the administration when they bring in funding for their ideas.)

When Enrichment isn’t enough! • Compacting curriculum to move students ahead at a faster pace. • Subject advancement • Teacher Recommendation • GPA • Standardized Test scores in 90+ • AIMSweb, MAP, STAR, Fast, Numats, ACT Suite, etc. • Reading level 2+years above grade level • IQ if necessary • Grade skipping

  14. Advanced Placement and Honors Classes serve the needs of our G-T Students Questions for your coordinator and administrator: 1. How do you prepare your students for AP? 2. Do you have policies in place for who can take AP and how the tests are paid for? 3. Are your Honors classes aligned so as to prepare students for AP?
