Binge Drinking – two areas of concern A long term health issue AND an immediate social problem • Alcohol played a part in • over 1 million fights • 19,000 sexual assaults each year • 76,000 facial injuries • Hangovers result in 17 million lost working days, costing employers £6.4 billion This research focuses on the social issues

  3. Our research based on US obesity work Found that social influence is very powerful: the chance of any individual being obese increases by 57% if s/he has a friend who becomes obese

  12. How big is the binge…? • 950,000 – 18 -24 year old binge drinkers: • Each binge drinker has 80 bingeing sessions a year • more than one a week • 1.5 million binges in the UK every week • 200,000 binge-drinking sessions by young adults every day

To what extent does social influence have an effect • The chances of a young person being a binge drinker is 107%more likely if they have friends who are binge drinkers • This is sufficient by itself to explain the rise in binge drinking amongst young people  • Policies focusing on social influences will bring a successful reduction in anti-social behaviour • It can work – Think! – reduction in drink driving
