  2. Fitness Testing Physical fitness testing is currently the most common form of evaluating a student’s fitness level. Evaluation should be more focused on identifying who is physically inactive (Beighle, Pangrazi, Vincent, 2001) Educating students on how to evaluate their own physical activity levels helps promote being physically active for life. Give the students the key to be successful as they grow

  3. Measuring Physical Activity - Self monitoring - Accelerometers - Self-report questionnaires - Pedometers - Heart rate monitors Pedometers measure distance walked/run, daily steps, calories expended, and duration of activity Pedometers can not measure frequency or intensity!!

  4. Uses of Pedometers • To teach students • To improve teaching • To improve the program • To increase awareness • - To increase activity levels

  5. Specific Needs Number of Pedometers and Why? Should have one for every child. When ordering, should order an additional 20%. ie - A class of 30 should order 36 pedometers. You might want to give them to students to take home for an assignment, but to also have flexibility in the activities you can teach. Pedometer Costs and Recommendations Pedometers can range from $6 to $40. Ordering in bulk is always cheaper. Funds can be obtained through PTA, business partners, universities, grants, etc. Brands: Yamax, Walk 4 Life, Accusplit

  6. Establishing a Routine • First discuss how they work, why they are appropriate for PE • Distribute pedometers, allow students to wear it the correct way, stress • to not shake it or reset them. • Have a master list of which pedometer is assigned to which student • Have a retrieval area where all the students know to return the pedometers to
