  1. Novisync The Interactive Drum Practice Pad

  2. Team Novisync Advisor Jason Richardson Hardware, Testing, and Packaging Dr. Raymond Winton Drew Newell Web page, Software and Debugging Randall Carmeans Hardware, Documentation, and Testing

  3. Outline • Problem • Solution • Design Refinements • Project Concerns • Test Plan • Final Design Progress

  4. Problem Statement Beginning drummers need a more visually effective way of learning how to play drums.

  5. Solution • Design an interactive drum practice pad that makes learning fun and easy through use of the following tools: • Display Screen • LED’s • Pre-programmed Rhythms • Accuracy Check

  6. Preliminary Design Approach • System Outputs • Metronome • Left and Right Timing LEDs • Scrolling Music on LCD • User Interaction • Enter Button • Menu Scroll Buttons • Drum Pad Sensor

  7. Outline • Problem • Solution • Design Refinements • Project Concerns • Test Plan • Final Design Progress

  8. Design Refinements • Working prototype from Design 1 • Messy wires • Unprotected LCD • Few patterns • Lack of musical notes

  9. Design Refinements • PCB

  10. Design Refinements • Housing • Fiberglass Prototype • Provide Protection for Components • Cleaner Appearance

  11. Design Refinements • Add Musical Notes • Display musical notes with “L” or “R” indication under each.

  12. Design Refinements • Musical Patterns • Lengthier Patterns • Finish Adding All 26 Rudiments • Switch to Diffused Lens LED’s • Provides More Even Light Distribution

  13. Outline • Problem • Solution • Design Refinements • Project Concerns • Test Plan • Final Design Progress

  14. Project Concerns • Product Sustainability • The system operates as designed for a reasonable amount of time. • Replaceable drumhead • Placement of transducer • Physical locale of transducer • Insulating foam around transducer • LEDs have a long average lifespan

  15. Project Concerns • Social • The Novisync introduces many children to music and the arts, which has been shown through a ten-year study, tracking more than 25,000 students, to increase test scores [2].

  16. Project Concerns • Music study can help kids understand advanced mathematical concepts. Music involves ratios, fractions, proportions, and thinking in space and time [2].

  17. Outline • Problem • Solution • Design Refinements • Project Concerns • Test Plan • Final Design Progress

  18. Test Plan • Software • Test all patterns for correctness • Hardware • Verify the LEDs, buttons, and LCD are operating correctly • Field Test • High school band director • Group of children in target age range

  19. Final Design Progress
