American Sign Language Background • American Sign Language was introduced to the United States in 1814 by a minister named Dr. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. • His neighbor’s nine-year-old daughter was deaf and, although she was smart, she couldn’t communicate. He wanted to teach her how to communicate with others. Through this encounter, ALS was created.
