  1. EFFECT OF FORMULATION FACTORS ON THE FLOATING SUSTAINED RELEASE PROPRANOLOL HYDROCHLORIDE CAPSULESM.M. NafadiFromDepartment of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Egypt.

  2. Aim of work Involved the design of propranolol hydrochloride floating capsules and investigation of the in vitro release pattern of the drug . Moreover , the effect of hydrodynamically balanced system(HBS) on prolongation of the drug release which has a short plasma half-life of 3 to 6 hours was investigated.

  3. CONCLUSION 1-All formulae depicted floating property with varying cumulative drug release. 2-When drug formulated with HPMC alone , the amount of drug released decreased as the concentration of HPMC increased. Therefore F5 gave the slowest release pattern when compared to the plain drug and other formulations(F1-F4) 3-Presence of carbopol in formulation improved the floating and sustained the drug release. The amount of drug release was affected by drug/co-polymer ratio.

  4. 4-Inclusion of magnesium stearate in formulation improved to great extent the buoyant behaviour of tested formulation over a period of 12hr added to the swelling behaviour of HPMC/carbopol co-polymer. 5-Presence of effervescent mixture in formulation accelerated the drug release to large extent especially when used with HPMC alone. 6-The increased weight increased the density of the medium hence reduced the amount of drug released .

  5. 1- Preparation of floating capsules. The mixture of each formula was manually blended homogeneously using a mortar and a pestle . The well blended powder was then manually inserted into conventional hard gelatin capsules. Formulations of different prepared propranolol hydrochloride floating systems are shown in table(1).
