Trench Vocabulary • Trench- a deep ditch used for shelter from enemy fire • Parapet- front of the trench • Parados- rear of the trench • Fire-step- two or three foot ledge that allows one to see over the top of the trench • Trench foot- medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary, and cold conditions • Funk-holes- small areas scraped out of the side of a trench where soldiers would sleep during rain

  4. Vocabulary • Queue- file, line, people waiting their turn • Billet- lodging for a soldier • Pettifogging- insignificant matters

  5. Vocabulary • Barrack- a building or group of building for lodging soldiers • Latrine- toilet or something used as a toilet • Esprit de corps- a sense of unity among a group of persons closely associated in a task

  6. Vocabulary • Gangrene- death of soft tissue by obstructed circulation • Tommy- rations distributed to troops • Munitions- materials or weapons used in war

  7. Vocabulary • Aspirant- a person who aspires • Lorry- long wagon without sides; conveyances running on rails; a motor truck • Barrage- barrier of artillery fire to protect troops and stop the enemy

  8. Vocabulary Battery- 2 or more pieces of artillery for combined action Quartermaster- an officer in charge of clothing, quarters, etc. for troops Chlorine Gas- gas used in war that destroys the respiratory organs of its victim
