  2. There are many types of assessments that are created to help students who are struggling readers • Formal assessments Formal assessments have data that supports the conclusion made from test. Formal assessments are Standardized. • Informal assessments Informal assessments are not data driven. They are content and Performance driven

  3. Informal Reading Inventory • IRI is a type of assessments that serves as a valuable aid in helping teachers determines students reading levels, strengths and weaknesses.

  4. Rational For IRI • Find appropriate match between the child and the type of books the student reads • Provides feedback on the student reading behavior

  5. Factors that affect students performances • Educational factors Educational factors are factors that come under the domain or control of the educational system and influences learning. • Non Educational Factors The student’s environment, parent’s education, neighborhoods, and social, economic class

  6. Educational Factors • Instructional materials • Instructional time • Teacher

  7. Noneducational Factors • Environment • Gender • Nutrition

  8. Administering Process • Build positive relationship with student • Provide positive reinforcement • Create an environment free from distractions • The IRI should be one on one

  9. IRI Administering Process • Word recognition inventory • Oral reading passages • Listening Capacity test

  10. Word Recognition • The WRI is composed of the word lists that are selected from the basal reader series. • It is used to determine the oral reading passages of the Informal Reading Inventory. • The Word reading inventory WRI) evaluates students’ ability to recognize words in isolation.

  11. Oral Reading Passage • Based on Informal reading inventory. • Reads short passages independently. • Answers questions based oral reading independently.

  12. Listening Capacity Test • Student must listen to passage that is read to them. • Student must answer both literal and inference questions correctly
