  16. DS Status DS team members (Ali Feizi (564), Yiting Wen (553), Tsu-wei Hwang (544) with QA support from Larry Morgan integrating Purple Dewar

  17. DS Status • Teledyne has completed all testing of the final four SCAs in the NIRSpec inventory. • Two devices failed testing and are clearly non-flight detectors • S058 and S060 exhibited good total noise and dark current performance and are candidate flight spare detectors • Preliminary Results (as analyzed by GSFC personnel): • Total Noise for S058 & S060 is 6.8e- rms and 6.4e- rms (Spec is 6e- rms) • Dark Current for S058 & S060 is 0.013e-/s and 0.012e-/s (Spec is 0.01e-/s) • DQE performance meets spec • The final results will be used to determine whether either or both devices meet the NIRSpec sensitivity requirement (S053 & S044 will also be included in this analysis). • The best two detectors will be used for the Flight Spare FPA Build.

  18. DS Status • FPE to ASIC communication issues • Teledyne has determined that the issue can be solved by raising the common mode voltage to the ASIC • Working to change the common mode voltage (from 1.1 V to 1.8 V) supplied to the ASIC by the FPE • Meeting system noise/power requirements • The Detector Subsystem has not met both noise and power requirements during testing on the ETU and Pathfinder systems. • Noise requirements (<6e-) have been met, but at increased power dissipation from the ASIC. The ASICs being used on the Pathfinder Detector Subsystem have power dissipations of 14-17mW versus a requirement of 10.5mW

  19. MSS Status • Microshutter Array Status • 5 flight candidate arrays have been integrated into quadrants – 4 of these 5 will be installed into the flight unit • Addtional arrays are in the process of testing and/or assembly – these will be used for flight spares Microshutter Array • Mechanism status • Flight launch lock motors (qualification, flight, and flight spare) have been received and passed initial acceptance testing • Engineering Test Unit (ETU) magnet actuator successfully completed 2x (~100K) life cycles • Flight magnet actuators are scheduled to be delivered this month

  20. MSS Status • “Test Bed” Microshutter Control Electronics (MCE) • In final assembly and testing • Flight Microshutter Control Electronics (MCE) • Motor, Digital, and Analog Control Card (MDACC) is in assembly • Array Interface Card (AIC) will begin assembly following successful testing of the AIC test bed board. • CIC and Backplane are in testing • Power Control Assembly (PCA) assembly in progress. • Microshutter Shock • An updated specification with significantly reduced shock levels has been developed and flowed to the MSA • The MSA structural model has been tested at Astrium and the required shock levels were achieved • Shock testing on the qualification Microshutter Array will be performed at Astrium, Freidrichshafen Germany the week of May 25

  21. OA Cover Achievements: • DM delivered and mounted • Design improved • FM manufacturing started Next steps: • FM manufacturing & delivery

  22. Science Support & IPS • DM/ETU NIRSpec • NIRSpec as an imager (detector in the MSA plane) • Not the actual flight hardware • Probing the distortion and image quality of the NIRSpec “imaging” stage independently from the spectrographic stage • Not possible at FM level NIRS-CRAL-PL-0007 • FM NIRSpec • The complete NIRSpec with the flight hardware • One month of cryogenic time dedicated to the calibration / characterization of the instrument. • Dedicated OGSE providing the necessary illumination patterns and sources. NIRS-CRAL-PL-0001

  23. Science Support & IPS • Key points FM calibration • Most extensive campaign prior the commissioning phase ! • Build the set of calibration files necessary to prepare the NIRSpec data processing software. Deliverable to NASA/STScI. • As far as possible, allow an early validation of some key NIRSpec operation and calibration concepts / schemes. • Wavelength calibration, target acquisition… • Major NIRSpec-level calibration items • Calibration of the “coordinate transforms” between the OTE focal plane and the detector plane (for TA !) • Calibration of the MOS spectrographic modes • Extensive and time-consuming calibration! • Classical spectrographic calibration steps • Calibration of the SLIT and IFU spectrographic modes. • Characterization of NIRSpec radiometric response

  24. TV Facility Achievements: • TV facility aceptance achieved (3 blank tests performed) • NIRSpec DM/ETU in cold test now Next steps: • Completion of cold test • Prepare FM test campaign

  25. JWST Partner’s Workshop NIRSpec Status • Status of Instrument Activities • Subcontractor Status This document is the property of Astrium.
