  3. Philmont • “Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s largest national high-adventure base. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky tails.” • Philmont hosted about 26,000 scouts over the summer of 2011 • The property stretches over 215 square miles

  12. The Health Lodge • The health lodge is responsible for providing health care to all boy scouts during their trek as well as over 1000 BSA employees • Common chief complaints include musculoskeletal injuries, altitude sickness and gastroenteritis

  13. What you can learn • Wilderness emergency medicine • Training and experience similar to an emergency medical technician or paramedic • Radio lingo • Hiking, backpacking and other outdoor skills • e.g., fly fishing and rock climbing • Invaluable experience for returning as a 4th year

  14. Your Job – Health Lodge Driver • Radio dispatch • Emergency driver • Search and rescue • Backcountry taxi • Highway transport • First aid instructor • Night Shift

  15. The Radio Room • Radio dispatch takes calls over the radio from staffed backcountry camps • The liaison between the patient and medic, you monitor the transport of patients to and from base camp and to various outside clinics and hospitals

Philmont Myths and Realities Myth Reality • Inconsistent 12 – 24 hour shifts, with both fast and slow paces • Your job is primarily physician and medic support, focusing on logistics, emergency medicine and transportation • Search and rescues • Predictable, 8 hour day, 5 days a week work schedule • Your job is primarily clinical with daily opportunities for procedures • Search and rescues
