  2. Understanding researcher behaviours globally • Practical challenges for researchers in data sharing Stuart, David; Baynes, Grace; Hrynaszkiewicz, Iain; Allin, Katie; Penny, Dan; Lucraft, Mithu; Astell, Mathias (2018): Whitepaper: Practical challenges for researchers in data sharing https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.5975011.v1

  3. Finding - How important is data discoverability?

  4. Finding - Data sharing practice by subject

  5. Finding - What barriers do authors face in sharing data?

  6. Finding - Reasons for not sharing data differ between junior and senior researchers

  7. Response to survey findings - research data policies • Around 1,400 (>50%) Springer Nature journals have adopted a standard research data policy as of March 2018 • Preference data archiving in repositories over SI/ESM • Support community specific policies, mandates and repositories • Promote use of data availability statements • Promote data citation • https://www.springernature.com/gp/authors/research-data-policy/journal-policies/15369670

  8. Research Data Alliance Interest Group Co-chairs: Natasha Simons (ANDS), SimonGoudie (Wiley), Azhar Hussain (Jisc), Iain Hrynaszkiewicz (Springer Nature) Primary objective is to help define common frameworks for research data policy – starting with journals and publishers and latterly funding agencies https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/data-policy-standardisation-and-implementation

  9. Response to survey findings - research data helpdesk

  10. Response to survey findings - Research Data Support

  11. Response to survey findings - Research Data Training • What does research data training offer? • Directly addresses the main challenges of data sharing • Part of the Nature Research Academies, offering trusted quality and value • A unique perspective and trusted experience within the realm of research data • Training for both researchers & information professionals, appropriate for all levels

  12. Survey Limitation Main limitation is lack of responses from outside of Europe and North America. In 2018, Springer Nature re-ran the survey in Japan and >1000 Japanese researchers completed it.

  13. Findings - Challenges and opportunities for Japanese researchers • Online survey in English & Japanese that received more than 1000 responses • Infographic and data on figshare: DOI: 10.6084/m9.figshare.6328952

  14. Findings - 56% of Japanese researchers have created a Data Management Plan

  15. Survey report and raw data are freely accessible • Stuart, David; Baynes, Grace; Hrynaszkiewicz, Iain; Allin, Katie; Penny, Dan; Lucraft, Mithu; Astell, Mathias (2018): Whitepaper: Practical challenges for researchers in data sharing • White paper • https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.5975011 • Original survey data https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.5971387 • Japan survey data https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.6328952
