  3. BioEarth Overview

  4. Goal and Objectives Overarching Goal: To improve the understanding of regional and decadal-scale C:N:H2O interactions in context of global change to better inform decision makers involved in natural and agricultural resource management. Specific Objectives: Air to Land Linkage: To investigate the role that atmospheric processes play in land surface C:N:H2O cycles. Coupled Air/Land: To explore how ecosystem changes in the PNW affect land/atmosphere interactions. Coupled Air/Land/Human: To examine how potential policy changes might affect the interactions between C:N:H2O cycles and regional-scale climate. Communication: To explore how to best communicate the model results to resource managers and policy makers.

What makes BioEarth unique among most Earth system models? • Emphasis on adding detail to inform agricultural and natural resource use and management • Economics • Cropping systems • Water management • Nitrogen management • Finer temporal and spatial scales than represented in global scale models • Focus on natural climate variability, particularly ENSO dynamics

Approach and Rationale • Integrate or link existing sophisticated “stand alone” models that are in continuous development • Atmosphere: meteorology, atmospheric chemistry • Terrestrial: hydrology, soil/plant biogeochemistry in cropped and natural systems, biogenic emissions • Aquatic: river routing, reservoir modeling, nutrient export • Economics • As the “stand alone” components continue to improve by their developers, BioEarth will also continue to develop

  10. Press Release • NSF/DOE/USDA still has not released a press release. However, the projects are available in the grant databases (i.e., CRIS for us). Peer Review Group • Atmospheric Modeling: Robin Dennis accepted • Cyberinfrastructure: Ilkay Altintas accepted • Water Resources: Alan Hamlet, Keith Cherkauer or Laura Bowling • Economics: Ronald Sands: to be invited • Ecology: Scott Ollinger to be invited • Agriculture: Possibly Clyde Frossi • Systems Modeling: James Sytviski was suggested but he is now director of IGBP. Possible WieslawMaslowski (RACM)? • Other: Please let me know if others are needed as we go forward • A “Peer Reviewer Expectation” document will be drafted early Spring 2012; minimal obligations
