  2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION NAPE: Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists Membership: Consist of persons involved in the applications of geosciences and related engineering disciplines both in the oil and gas industry and the academia

BACKGROUND INFORMATION • Main Objective: • Advance the geosciences, especially as they relate to petroleum resources; to disseminate information relating to geosciences and the associated disciplines. • Promote the technology of exploring for, exploiting, and producing Petroleum • To foster the spirit of scientific research throughout its membership

University Assistance Programme (UAP) • Founded in 1999 in response to the noticeable decline in the standard of Geoscience education in Nigeria • Main Objective: • To complement the effort of the Universities, States and Federal Government to maintain established educational standard. " To contribute substantially to the continuous improvement of educational among Higher Institutions and Oil/Mining Industries.

IDENTIFIED INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES • low level of funding • limited access to ICT infrastructure and equipment • Lack of basic teaching & research infrastructure • Loss of quality academic staff • Explosive student population increase • Poor background of university entrants • Declining field work/ practical experience • incessant power outage

  14. AAPG/NAPE collaborations • Imperial Barrel Award. FUTA won the first edition in Africa & 7th position in the world in San Antonio • OAU won 2009 edition in Africa and going to represent Africa in Denver Colorado this week • Refresher Fieldwork for lecturers • Field Immersion programme for students (8 students going to Idiana September 6-16 • ExxonMobil supporting Nigeria Universities with $2million dollars annually (Total, Agip, Chevron, Schlumberger, Halliburton etc) • Leadership forum yearly • Old Students Associations

  15. NEXT PHASE • Promote practical collaboration between the universities & Oil & Gas industry with respect to research collaboration

  16. Conclusion • We believed as an organisation that for Nigeria and Nigerian universities to attain the necessary educational standard equal to other parts of the world, appropriate fees must be charged.
