A Modern Epidemic • It is estimated that an incident of bullying occurs every seven seconds in an elementary school setting • There are several different forms of bullying, ranging from physical confrontations to cyber maliciousness to verbal and psychological torment. Any aggression with intent to harm or disturb is bullying behavior.

  3. Definition of Relational Bullying • Deliberate exclusion of an individual by peers • Based on power dynamics and peer relationships • Long term form of bullying • Causes psychological damage

  4. Problems • Extremely difficult to prove because ‘girls will be girls’ • Most victims take the blame on themselves • Can be part of or result in other types of bullying • There is no easy resolution

  5. How can a librarian help? • Provide positive role models through literature • Encourage inclusive social activities • Foster a safe environment for victims and allow them to tell you what they need
