  1. Newton’s Three Laws of Motion Physics

  2. Why should we listen to this old, dead white guy??? • His work has revolutionized and helped establish modern science for OVER 200 YEARS! • So what? • Without his work in mathematics and science we would not be able to understand, and enjoy, watching a small metal ball spin for two minutes in a glass. • And Physics students wouldn’t come up with such awesome rap songs about Newton’s Three Laws of Motion!

  3. Newton’s first law • An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an opposite force. • What is the term for this concept? • INERTIA!

  4. Now how would this look in Real life? • Remember, kids, don’t try this at home! (Unless an adult says it’s okay…with supervision!) • Egg Drop Science Trick • (Neat, huh?!) • Let us see how the pros do it! • Egg Drop Inertia Challenge • Are your minds blown yet?

  5. Newton’s second law • When a force is put against an object it will accelerate. • HOWEVER, the more mass an object has the more force will be needed to move that object. • So if you were to serve a volleyball over a net it would not take much force. But what if you were to serve a large, round rock over that net? • It wouldn’t go as far. • And that would really hurt! • F = ma • Force equals mass times acceleration

  6. Making connections! • Newton’s Second law IN SPAAAACE! And on Earth. • Force, Mass and Acceleration

  7. Newton’s third law • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction • If we blow up a balloon and then release it in midair, what is going to happen to that balloon? What about the air? • The balloon will go flying off behind a desk, or land on someone’s head. • The air is escaping in the opposite direction, propelling that balloon to land on someone’s head. • Like so!

  8. The third law in motion • Two almost equal masses pushing against each other • Stormy Weathers and the Science News • Newton’s Cradle • Tricks with Newton’s Cradle

  9. Now What? • Now that you’ve taken a look into the wondrous world of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion…and observed some examples…it is time for you to create your own! • With a partner, brainstorm and design a model to demonstrate one of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. • Using the materials provided for you (or with permission to bring in materials from home) create the model for your designated motion. • After careful and meticulous experimentations, present the model to the class with your partner. (Remember, it is okay and encouraged to ask for volunteers for your demonstrations. Just like Ansley!)
