A civil war took place in China from the end of WWII until 1949 • The two sides (Nationalists and Communists) had avoided conflict with each other while fighting the Japanese • After WWII, the Communists under Mao Zedong fought the Nationalists, who were led by Chiang Kai-Shek and were in power • The US supported the Nationalists • In 1949, the Communists took control of mainland China and the Nationalists fled to Taiwan

Posters • You will take on the role of political activists in the US in 1948 and create posters trying to convince the American people to support either Mao Zedong or Chiang Kai-Shek • Talk to your partner(s) and decide which side you want to support • Create a poster containing both images and text

  6. Discussions (Step 1) • Come up with four complex discussion questions regarding the Civil War and Communist takeover in China • These should come from the top two levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy

  7. Discussions (Step 2) • You will now take turns leading discussions • Try to lead a whole discussion on one question, move on to one of your others only if you have to • Make sure that everybody in your group speaks • If everybody in your group agrees, play devil’s advocate
