Sedimentary Rock

Sedimentary Rock. Organizing Sedimentary Rocks. All made through the compacting and cementing of layers of… Sediment – any fragment or piece of rock, plant, animal, or dissolved mineral. Three Types of SR: sorted by the material that forms them . 1. Clastic. 2. Chemical. 3. Organic.

  1. Sedimentary Rock

  2. Organizing Sedimentary Rocks All made through the compacting and cementing of layers of… Sediment – any fragment or piece of rock, plant, animal, or dissolved mineral.

  3. Three Types of SR: sorted by the material that forms them. 1.Clastic 2.Chemical 3.Organic Rock Fragments Plants & Animals Dissolved Minerals

  4. 1. CLASTIC • Sedimentation – sorting of sediments by sediment size

  5. 2. CHEMICAL • Minerals dissolved in water are precipitated, when the water becomes over- saturated with minerals. Examples: • Calcite (CaCO3) Limestone (Chemical) • the stalactites and stalagmites you see in caves form this way • Minerals dissolved in water are deposited when the water evaporates away. Examples: • Halite & Gypsum Rock Salt & Rock Gypsum • Shallow seas in arid climates evaporate quickly leaving behind minerals

  6. 3. ORGANIC • Shells from ocean dwellers, build up on the ocean floor. Examples: • Calcite (CaCO3) Limestone (Organic) • Silica (SiO2) Chert • Dead plant material builds up in swamps. Example: • Peat Coal
