  1. 1st Year English • basic information

  2. Building a Foundation • What do science students need? • 1st year English is a bridge between: • high school English & • Science English (2nd year)

  3. High School English

  4. What do you need? • To improve your English, you need to have INPUT (reading and listening), and OUTPUT (speaking and writing). • Sometimes, you need careful and slow input and output, so that you can study new things (grammar and words), and understand them very well in your head. • But you also need LOTS of easy input to help you REALLY understand and know basic English in your heart. (See ① later) • You also need to speak a lot to remember English well, become a better communicator, and increase your speed. (See ② later.)

  5. In Japanese high schools, most students do a lot of SLOW, DIFFICULT reading. People don’t usually read whole books in English. They don’t speak so much (and not so freely). And they usually write only SHORT paragraphs. Usually, they have to be careful about grammar mistakes.

  6. Balanced English in 1st year

  7. In high school, your study focus was ACCURACY (seikakusa) or QUALITY (shitsu). • Now, our focus is FLUENCY (ryuuchousa) or QUANTITY (ryou).

  8. We study: • LOTS of EASY reading. You will learn basic words and sentence patterns NATURALLY. • LOTS of TALKING. Through repetition and regular practice, you can become a faster, more confident speaker.

  9. In this way, you can know English more naturally. This is BALANCED English study.
