  2. Desert A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.

Unique desert features • Deserts take up one-third of the Earth’s land surface. • Deserts generally receive less than 25 cm of rain per year. • Desert plants have to adapt to survive. • Deserts have very high daytime temperatures and very low night time temperatures. • Polar deserts can be covered with snow or ice and are also called tundras.

  4. The Sahara Desert • The Sahara desert is the largest hot desert in the world. • It is in northern Africa. • The Sahara covers nine million square kilometers and twelve countries.

  5. Desert animals • Some of the animals that live in the desert are: • Roadrunners • Meerkats • Scorpions • Lizards • Hyenas • Rattlesnakes

  6. Desert plants • Cactus • Palm trees • Prickly pear • Grasses

  7. Bay • A large body of water connected to an ocean or sea that is formed by an inlet.

Bay features • Bays are semicircular in shape. • Small bays may be only a few hundred meters wide, but large bays can be several hundred kilometers wide. • Bays were used for settlements in history because ships could be protected there. • Bays are formed by the movement of the sea. • Bays can block waves and winds.

  9. San Francisco Bay • The San Francisco Bay drains water from approximately forty percent of California. • It is 3 to 12 miles wide. • It is in Northern California.
