  11. The new world, since Sept 2012 Fees: Students pay for practically the entirety of their teaching. The state may, in some areas, contribute a top-up The change in funding arrangements: University teaching income used to come from state (i.e. taxpayers’) money via HEFCE. In the new system it comes from student fees via Student Loans Company. Our HEFCE direct grant will decline from ±33% of income pre-2012 to ±20% Our overall state funding will decline from ±46% of income to ±34% of income Student tuition fees will rise from ±27% of income to ±40% of income Deregulation of Home Student Numbers: Initially a somewhat complicated “core and margin” model Free-market recruitment of students with A-levels at AAB+ for Sept 2012, and ABB+ for Sept 2013, and any student from Sept 2015 Increasingly fierce competition “Flat-cash” settlement on research

So… 40% of our income is premised on recruiting the requisite number of good students, and meeting their expectations ... in an increasingly competitive free-market HE system Please keep this in mind for Visit Days, teaching, feedback & assessment, and all activities relating to student satisfaction.
