  2. Five trends that affect your interests

  3. Scotland, tourism, and technology For instance

  4. Television Near and dear to many a heart--- John Logie Baird, a Scot, actually took what was written on paper by so many, and transformed it into the complex device we have today. He perfected his system well before Jenkins or Farnsworth in the States. Yet, it was still mechanical. The first broadcast took place for BBC, in 1929 The first electronic picture image to be developed was by Farnsworth in 1928 but had no backing. This type of television was not take up till the 1930s. http://www.mztv.com/newframe.asp?content=http://www.mztv.com/pioneers.html

  5. Tartan, Plaids, Kilts It was not always so

  6. The Kilt, Plaid and Tartan • What you see today is a modern take on an ancient garment • It really had no name till 16th century • The type of kilt that we will begin to encounter in the 16th century is called (in my poor Gaelic) a feilidh-mhor (great wrap), a breacan-feile (tartan wrap) or simply a belted plaid.  All refer to the same garment.  (http://www.albanach.org/kilt.html)

  7. Yet, wool manufacturing is an old industry • Stages in the development of the final product • The manufacture of cloth can be viewed as a number of stages • Gathering of the wool • Preparing the fibres for spinning • Spinning the wool into yarn • Dyeing of the wool • Weaving the thread into cloth • Waulking the Cloth

  8. Waulking the Wool • Technique, form, function and fun (well, okay not so much fun) • What is waulking?

  9. Yet, how do you put on 5 yards of fabric?

  10. The Kilt today • Started to evolved between the late 18th and mid-19th century. • Interest in Gael or Scotland was due to the Romantic movement • Which was just more than tartan but the cultural richness of Scotland • Music • Dance • Art • Literature • The Human Element

  11. The Kilt Today • Yet, some would debate that these icons of Scotland are an eye sore and superficial • But, then again…
