  1. Reconstruction Reconstruction: 1865-1877 Process the Federal Government used to readmit the Confederate states into the Union Freedmen’s Bureau: 1865 Set up schools, and hospitals, & distributed food, clothing and fuel throughout the South Black Codes: 1865 Laws instituted to limit the freedom of African-Americans. African Americans could not carry guns or meet in unsupervised groups. Had to carry a work permit 13th Amendment: 1865 "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States.

  2. Reconstruction • Civil Rights: 1866 Rights granted to all citizens • 14th Amendment: 1866 All people born in the U.S. were citizens and had the same rights. All citizens were to be granted equal protection under the law • Freedmen’s Schools: 1865-1870 Schools set up to educate the newly freed African-Americans • Sharecropping: 1865 onward A worker rented a plot of land to farm. This often led to a cycle of work that indebted the worker to the landowner – a recycled version of slavery. Similar to tenant farming in Europe.

Reconstruction • Ku Klux Klan: 1866 Secret group dedicated to restoring Democratic control of south & keep former slaves powerless • Lynched: 1860s- onward Ku Klux Klan beat people and burned down houses. They usually targeted African American land owners or those prospering. They would sometimes hang them on the spot without a trial as punishment for supposed crimes • 15th Amendment: 1870 Stated that no person could be prevented from voting because of race, color or previous condition of servitude • Panic of 1873: 1873 Several large Eastern banks ran out of money because of previous bad loans. Panic ensued, unemployment ran high, businesses closed, economic depression occurred, many railroad companies went of business

  4. Reconstruction • Compromise of 1877: 1877 Focus was 1876 election which was too close to call a winner. Compromise: 1) Hayes (Republicans) becomes president 2) Federal troops would be withdrawn from the south 3)Federal govt would provide loans to the south to build railroads linking to the west coast 4) Hayes would appoint a Democrat to his cabine 5) Democrats promised to respect African-Americans’ civil and political rights • Legacy of Reconstruction: 1877-onward African Americans: 1) could vote and hold public office 2) Protected under civil laws of 13th, 14th and 15th amendments 3) African-American schools and churches endured 4) Reconstruction changed our society by putting African-Americans on the path toward equality
