HeartCode BLS and ACLS uses Microsimulation Technology / Scenario-based Learningand VAM -Voice Assisted Manikin Technology Skills on a computerized manikin. 4

  5. How does the NEW HeartCode Program Work? NEW HeartCode vs. Old HeartCode • A Brief History Healthcare Providers can get their AHA course certification in just 3 easy steps! • Step 1 – Part 1/Cognitive: lessons, textbook(s), testing • Step 2 – Part2/Skills (2 options for BLS: VAM’s or live instructors, only Live instructor for PALS) • Step 3 – Course Completion Card 5

  7. A Collection of Abstracts from Scientific Papers ...http://bit.ly/Q-CPR Abstract: Quality of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation During In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Conclusion: The results from the study revealed very poor CPR quality in the in-hospital setting.  That is too few and shallow chest compressions, and too many ventilations per minute. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Abstract:  An Automated Voice Advisory Manikin System for Training in Basic Life Support Without an Instructor.  A Novel Approach to CPR Training Conclusion:  Feedback can (almost immediately)improve the basic CPR skills performance of paramedic students.  In addition, when students begin with feedback, they attain a high level of performance and maintain that high level even when feedback is taken away. 7

  8. What are the Benefits of HeartCode? Benefits to the student/provider… • Students can complete the program at their own pace, on their own schedule • Available 24/7 • Provides instant feedback on strengths/weaknesses via detailed debriefing • Allows student to earn Contact Hours provided by the American Heart Association (up to 12 for ACLS an 11.74 for PALS) • Fun, challenging, change of pace from traditional course 8

  9. What are the Benefits of HeartCode? Benefits to the institution … • Reduces cost – instructors, supplies, staff replacement • Promotes a clear cost structure • Maintains a standardized, high level of professional competency • Motivates staff due to convenience, fun/challenging testing and credit hours provided (PALS) • Allows for easy monitoring of staff performance …. provides all HealthStream Reporting Capability 9

  10. How long does it take for a student to complete the HeartCode? • BLS/HCP • ~1 hour • ACLS • ~4-6 hours • PALS Course • Based on limited student data: • Part 1 Cognitive: ranges from 5 ½ hours to 12+ hours • Part 2 Skills: ranges from 2-3 hours • Traditional course: • Initial – 16 hours - only offered at some facilities - • Recertification – 8 hours

  11. AHA Training Memo: Skills Practice and Testing for HeartCode™ PALS Part 1 DATE: January 8, 2010 • Course Completion Requirements • 1. Successful completion of all cases in the HeartCode PALS Part 1 program • (with live AHA PALS Instructor …) • 2. Successful completion of the required CPR skills test administered by an AHA PALS Instructor • 3. Successful demonstration of the management of respiratory emergencies • 4. Successful demonstration of intraosseous access techniques • 5. 12. Key Questions to consider … • How many students do you train in BLS/HCP, ACLS and PALS annually? • Courses structure – Where? When? What equipment? • What are the biggest challenges/obstacles (over full classes, physicians not attending, lack of instructors…) • Do you charge for the course? How much do you charge employees vs. non-employees? • What does it cost you per student to teach the course? Don’t forget hourly rates in OT, replacing staff on the floor, books, facilities, etc. • Any opportunities to further market and provide these courses to non-employees your area? Become a profit center? 12
