  1. Does Cassiobury Park meet the needs of young people? A Y9 field investigation

  2. Starting place… • Choice of topic – why this? • Most of us use CP each week even if only to walk through to reach the New Field. It’s very popular with Watford Boys. • Choice of site - why Cassiobury Park? • It is very local & therefore accessible. • Defining key points – “young people” • Use of park is relatively unrestricted by children over 11 up to 16 yrs • “needs” • Activities are limited for children of this age so the Park may provide lots of opportunities for recreational and social activities but does it do everything they need? • This is what we will try to find out…

  3. Brainstorm! What do you think we should do? Work with a partner to devise some ideas for us to use. For instance, mapping? Asking questions in some way? Photos? Feed back to the class. How do we go about collecting data to help answer this question?

  4. Action Plan • What are our aims? • Where is the site, ie, Cassiobury Park? • What are the methods we will use to carry out this field exercise? • Carry out the field exercise, ie, collect the data. • Collate results • Present results – maps, graphs, photos etc • Describe and analyse results • Draw conclusions • Evaluate your work.

  5. Environmental Quality Survey Environmental feature Noisy -2 -1 0 1 2 Quiet Dirty -2 -1 0 1 2 Clean Built up -2 -1 0 1 2 Natural Dangerous -2 -1 0 1 2 Safe Plus your own ideas???

  6. In your groups… • Decide who is to do which job or if you will share the work (which is most efficient?) • Each group must have the following: • Camera • Clipboard(s) • Copies of questionnaire (if using one) • Copies of any other survey sheets • Spare paper • Pens/pencils • COAT, GLOVES etc

  7. NB Formal and Informal activities. Mapping – activities & facilities Mark on your section of the map what there is to do & what people are doing in the relevant places, e.g., tennis courts; dog walking, jogging etc. Photographing – activities and facilities Take photos of these in the section you’ve been allocated. The Map

  8. The Questionnaire • Aim to ask 2 – 3 people each. You can ask people in other forms in the school. • Be polite! • Explain what we are trying to find out.

  9. The park in the news.. • Cassiobury Park will be the starring on the big screen as a backdrop for a new film, featuring Downturn Abbey actor Dan Stevens. • A film crew has set up in the park for three days, capturing scenes for “Summer in February”, based on a real-life love story between Edwardian artists in 1911 and 1914. • The parts shot in Cassiobury Park will feature traditional wooden caravans and a fishing scene by the river. • There will be limited parking in Gade Avenue car park for three days.

  10. Police called to Cassiobury Park • Police have been called to Cassiobury Park after an incident this afternoon. • Four police cars were seen heading down Shepherds Road to the entrance of the park at around 2.30pm. • Police said they were currently looking into an incident which involved youths.

  11. Spooky sightings in Cassiobury Park, Watford • Spiritualist Jamie Burnell claims to have found "compelling evidence" of paranormal activity in Cassiobury Park and is now looking to investigate more locations in the Watford area. • Jamie was encouraged to investigate the popular Watford park after viewing a photograph in the Watford Observer earlier this year. • Since then, the 29-year-old has taken similar photographs and is adamant it is not just a coincidence. • The Watford resident said: "I'm 95 per cent certain that Cassiobury Park is very, very haunted. From a rating of one to ten, I would say it is a good eight. • Jamie said one of the photographs has an unexplainable mist surrounding him just as he was speaking about the old English urban legend of 'Spring-Heeled Jack'. He believes this mist is Jack's spirit and also claims the ghost of Lord Capel can be found in Cassiobury Park. • Following the success of the last investigation, Jamie is now looking to research other Watford areas such as the All Saints Church in Leavesden and the Leavesden Hospital cemetery, where Jamie said he has heard a voice asking "who are you?" through an Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) recorder. • Lord Capel • The ghost of Lord Capel is said to be a regular visitor of Cassiobury Park. It is told that Capel was a Royalist fighting for Charles I during the Civil War, and eventually surrendered to General Fairfax. According to legend, Capel was beheaded in 1649 and his heart was buried in Cassiobury Park, although the location was lost over time. Many have claimed to have seen his headless spirit at night in the park, especially about March 9, though some have seen him with a head of long hair and a large moustache.

  12. How do I illustrate my results? • Graphs – what type suits your data? • Maps – what method of mapping suits the data? • Write a few sentences to describe what each graph or other appropriate data shows • Photographs – Why did you take them - what do they show? Annotate them. • Everyone will have to use the same method – why?

  13. Prepare graphs, annotate photos etc. Plot the facilities & activities you surveyed on the map. Use appropriate symbols and a key. Describe each set of results Add these to the outline map on the Notice Board in the classroom. How do I annotate the photos? Results… ChaChaCha cafe Footpath and cycle track

  14. Analysis & Conclusion • What do your results show? • Is Cassiobury Park suited to the needs of young people? • Would they like to see other facilities there that are different to what’s already there? What? Why? • Is the original statement correct?

  15. Evaluation • What could we have done differently? • Better? • How? • In addition?
