NT Servers • X: (Cross-departmental Transfers) -- ENGRCDC • Any Shared Drives (e.g., O:, K:, etc.) -- Dept. NT Servers • Default Printer should be set up by Technical Contact • The department NT server handles printers NOTE: Your technical support person sets up these initial network connections

Connections to Drives/Printers • Connections to Drivesare made from within Windows NT using Windows Explorer (or you can use File Manager) • Connections to Printerscan be made by going into Settings/Printers from START button or through Control Panel/Printers. • Drives & Printersare initiallyset up by your TechnicalContact though users have the ability to change them. • Users can change the drives they connect to when they login (using Windows Explorer/File Manager) and printers by START/Settings/Printers or through Control Panel/Printers. • Changes (connecting) can be set to reconnect on login

Terminology you should become familiar with • NT (Microsoft’s New Technology) • NT - Microsoft’s network software used by the College of Engineering • NT Server software - Network Management Software • Local (Client) software that is supported: • Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (WFW) • Windows v3 doesn’t necessary networking capability. • Windows 95/98 • Windows NT Workstation • Macintosh Systems (using Appletalk)

Terminology (continued) • Domain - PSU_ENGINEERING • The Engineering network (domain) is comprised of a number of NT servers (in most cases, each department/area will have its own server) • Engineering’s DOMAIN Name = PSU_ENGINEERING Examples of Department Server: • Dean’s Office Server(s) = ENGRDO1 & ENGRDO2 • Electrical Engineering Server = ENGREE • Engineering Science and Mechanics = ENGRESMEach department server will have a server name (ENGR…), and users within a department will be connected to the associated department server All participating department NT servers will be within the PSU_ENGINEERING domain

  18. Terminology (continued) • Shares • Area set up so specific users can ‘share’ files (equivalent of a shared service). (only authorized users would be able to access this created area/drive) • Network Connect/Disconnect (Map Network Drive) • Drive and printer connections are ‘USER’ specific. • A separate profile for each user who can login to an NT machine is set up • Profiles allow you to set desktop defaults, connect to drives, etc. • You must have a profile set up on different machines if you are going to be logging in using different workstations [you must have additional permissions to login on machines other than your regular workstation • You connect/disconnect from network drives from Windows Explorer or File Manager, and add/change printers using START/Settings/Printers or through Control Panel/Printers

Department NT Servers • Most departments within the College are part of the College’s network of NT Servers - the servers are physically located within the departments • Some departments in the College are fully administering their own NT Servers, but have adopted the same structures regarding network drives, etc. • EX: M: = personal area/shareN: = common department shareQ: = general information share • Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, are areas where users should check with the department’s NT Administrator to get specific network information.

NT SERVER ADMINISTRATORS • The NT Server Administrator is the person responsible for maintaining the server within your department • Information is available on the specific people you would use as support within your department for technical support. See your Administrative Aide or check the Website: Http://www.engr.psu.edu/www/spt/tc/tclist.html • Technical Contacts in departments will have the ability to add printers, shared areas and software for use on the department NT server

College Committees • Operator Committee • Each department has at least one Operator Representative • He/she attends bi-monthly meetings with Center Support Staff • Meetingsdeal with software-related issues, user issues, new software support info, network change information, training/support activities • Operator Reps relay information between the Center and department faculty & staff; in addition, they distribute handouts from meetings • Electronic mail is also used to inform Operator Reps of changes, updates, alerts, etc. that are computer- or network-related. • A web page devoted to Operator Committee meetings, handouts, schedule of meetings, lists of participants, and other information is available - http://www.engr.psu.edu/www/trg/opcom.html

College Committees (cont’d) • Technical Contact Committee • Technical contact within a department: • handles hardware/software installation • provides technical support for departmental hardware • acts as a technical liaison between Center Network Support Staff and department. • Technical Contact meetings are held through the Center - technical contact relays information between the Center and department faculty/staff regarding technical aspects of the NT servers/systems. • Technical Contact listings and other technical information can be found on the Web at http://www.engr.psu.edu/www/spt/tc/tc.html

  30. Workstation Identification Internet Name: sbg.cedcc.psu.edu Your workstation (PC, MAC, etc.) needs an IP Name and Address (Internet Protocol)

  31. Printer Identification DOADM01 dept area printer number Printers are identified by a printer name. They may also be identified with an IP name and address (Internet Protocol). For example: doadm01.engr-do.psu.edu

  32. NT Server Identification ENGRDO your dept Each NT Server has a name assigned to it - dept servers within the College begin with ‘ENGR’

  33. Engineering’s DOMAIN Name is: PSU_ENGINEERING The ‘DOMAIN’ includes all ‘participating’ department NT servers Engineering’s Primary Domain Controller (resides in the Center)

  34. Logging On to the Network

  35. Windows NT Logon • Turn on your system. • Windows NT loads, and the Windows NT window appears, telling you to CTRL/ALT/DEL to logon • Touch CTRL/ALT/DEL • If you (or someone else) had previously logged in, that user ID will appear in the logon window - you can simply change the ID • In the Password: area, key in your password • Domain should be PSU_Engineering[NOTE: Passwords are ‘case-sensitive’ - check to see if your CAPSLOCK is on if you get an invalid password/logon error NOTE: After 3 unsuccessful attempts to logon, you’ll be locked out for an hour [you can call the help line 3-3741 to get reset or wait the hour]

  36. Successful Login • If you successfully login, the NT desktop will appear. • You’ll be logged in with your username to your department’s server, e.g., ENGREE in the Domain PSU_Engineering. • Any drives/printer connections that were to reconnect will be connected on login • your technical contact should have made network connections initially - users can change network connections/printers. • If you receive any unusual errors when attempting to login, contact the Center Help Line at 863-3741for assistance. • You will be contacted within 15 minutes of your call.

  37. What You Connect to On Login • Your technical support personinitially sets up drives and printers that you get connected to on logon, for example - M:, N:, Q:, shared drives, printers , etc. • You can change these connections from within FILE MANAGER using DISK/Connect Network Drive, check box ‘RECONNECT AT STARTUP’ or you can use use NT Explorer to map a network drive, and check box ‘Reconnect at Login’ • Drive and printer settings are USER dependent in NT.

Connect to Network Drives(using Windows Explorer) • Connect to Shared Areas & Network Drives from EXPLORER (you may have a shortcut to File Manager on the desktop • If so, doubleclick on EXPLORER icon. Or • if you have no shortcut on desktop, click START button, select Programs, Windows NT Explorer

  40. Connecting to Network Drive (Using Explorer) • Toolbar buttons can be used to Map Network Drive & Disconnect Network DriveOR • You can also use the menu TOOLS/Map Network Drive or Disconnect Network Drive

Connecting Network Drive (cont’d) • Select an open network drive letter in Drive area: • In Path: area: • You can use the dropdown arrow to select connections previously made, or you may need to select from the list of servers/shares at bottom of window • Simply doubleclick on the SERVER name, then click the share

Connect to Network Drive(EX: Transfer Drive X:) • In this example, the network’s File Transfer Drive X: will be connected • Be sure to check the Reconnect at Login box to automatically reconnect • Doubleclick on Server in Shared Directories area) ENGRCDC (under PSU_ENGINEERING) • Click on the share named ‘Transfer’ • Click [OK] • This connects drive X:

  44. Disconnect from a Network Drive (using Explorer) • To disconnect a network drive in Explorer: • Click [DISCONNECT NETWORK DRIVE] toolbar button • Highlight the drive to disconnect • Click [OK] • NOTE: You can also use the menu option TOOLS/Disconnect Network Drive, select drive, click OK

Connect to Network Drives(using File Manager) • Connect to Shared Areas & Network Drives from FILE MANAGER(you may have a shortcut to File Manager on the desktop • If so, doubleclick on FILE MANAGER icon. • Or if you have no shortcut on desktop, select START/Run and type winfile, then touch [ENTER]

  47. Drives You Are Connected To • File Manager lists connected drives across the top of the window under the Menu Bar. • These drives are initially set up for you by your technical contact. But you have the ability change the drives you automatically connect to.

  48. Drives and Shares • You can disconnect from network drives and reconnect to drives that you choose. • To see which shares/services are ‘associated’ with the particular drives, click the down-arrow next to ‘drive’ list box (see illustration).

  49. Connect/Disconnect Drives (File Manager) • You can use the TOOLBAR icon to connect or disconnect drives • If you don’t see the toolbar - you can ‘activate’ it from the Menu: select OPTIONS from menu and click TOOLBAR. • Click on the ‘Connect’ or ‘Disconnect’ icon • OR...
