  3. CHVI Canada's contribution to the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise Partnership between Government of Canada (CIDA, CIHR, IC, PHAC, HC) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Began 2007, renewal 2010,operating until 2017 $139,000,000 initiative with approximately ¾ of dollars designated

CHVI - Canada’s Contribution to HIV Vaccine Development CHVI ALLIANCE Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation President, Global Health Minister of Health (Lead) Minister of International Cooperation Minister of Industry CHVI Secretariat TheCHVI Allianceis a Canadian network that brings together leading researchers from the public and private sectors, as well as the international community, to develop innovative solutions to the challenges facing HIV vaccine development. TheAlliance Coordinating Office (ACO)supports the Alliance and the Advisory Board, focusing on building and sustaining the Alliance, advising the Government of Canada and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on research gaps, prospecting innovative proposals to respond to identified gaps and promoting synergy among Alliance members. Priority 1 Harness Canada’s excellence in basic science and strengthen linkages with clinical research, social sciences and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as with vaccine researchers outside the HIV field Guiding Framework for the CHVI Alliance • Improve clinical trial and regulatory capacity in Canada and globally through community engagement • Engage communities, researchers and policy-makers in clinical trial and vaccine preparedness • Test HIV vaccine candidates in Canada • Generate and apply population-level knowledge to drive vaccine discovery and development • Strengthen linkages to understand mechanisms of immunity • Leverage preclinical resources to test vaccine concepts Canada’s Niche Priority 2 Amplify Canada’s strengths in clinical research, community engagement and capacity-building globally and nationally

Guiding Framework for the CHVI Alliance (continued) Enablers Priority 3 Accelerate the translation of Canada’s scientific discoveries • Create opportunities to engage industry in advancing vaccine concepts • Support researchers and companies in accessing GMP manufacturing capacity • Ensure Canadian and global regulators are engaged to accelerate clinical development Priority 4 Strengthen and enable new and early-career investigators • Integrate new investigators into the larger national/global HIV vaccine effort • Increase training in clinical trials and population / epidemiological research • Enrich training of researchers from Canada and developing countries

What is a Virtual Community? • Communities of Practice (CoP) are:groups “of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an on-going basis” (Wenger, McDermott, & Snyder, 2002, p.4). • Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoP), without excluding F2F rely primarily on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to connect their members
