Parent Teacher Communication • I can be reached at school after 8:00 a.m. 847-945-1075 ext. 4137 or at lwolff@dps109.org • Once school starts I will be involved in instruction and can not check messages until lunch time (11:40-12:30). Should you need to send an important message to me before this time you will have to ask the secretary to give me the message. • I again check messages during my planning time which varies. Refer to the specials schedule for the exact times.
If Your Child Is Sick Call the office and notify them. Also, leave a message for me as to whether you want homework sent home with someone or whether you will be coming in after school to pick up homework. I will not be able to have homework ready to be picked up until after school. Should you be going out of town, our school policy is to not make packets ahead of time for your child to work on while they are gone. Any work missed will be done when that child returns to school.
Homework • Homework will be given out most days during the week except on Fridays. • Homework is generally due the next school day. • Each day the class will copy their homework assignment onto an assignment sheet given each Monday. We do this at the end of the school day usually and these sheets will be placed in your child’s home folder along with the homework. This would be the place to check if your child doesn’t remember if he/she has homework. I’ll also try to add homework assignments to my website as well.
Oops Sheets If your child forgets a homework assignment, they’ll be given an Oops Sheet. They will bring this home to you and you will need to sign it. This needs to be returned the next school day along with the forgotten assignment. This is just a way for us to monitor and communicate with each other how your child is doing with remembering the homework. If homework frequently is forgotten, then together we will make a plan for you to help your child with this at home.

Reading Logs • Reading logs are a record of minutes that your child reads at home. • Each day they are expected to read at least 15 minutes at home and they record their minutes on the chart. • Reading logs are brought back to school on Wednesdays each week. They need to be signed by a parent. Weekend reading is encouraged but optional.
Other Important Information • Birthdays: When it is your child’s birthday, their name will be announced on the morning announcements and they will be asked to go to the office to choose a book from Mrs. Brett. In the classroom I give out a birthday certificate and pencil. If the birthday person would like to donate a book for our classroom library or a game for indoor recess, I will put their picture on the item and write their name on it. No treats or goody bags are allowed.
Book Orders Book orders will be coming becoming home each month. Each company requires a minimum 10.00 dollars per order. If we don’t receive $10.00 worth of orders I will return your money to you. Please send a check made out to Scholastic Books. NO CASH ACCEPTED.
Star of the Week • Each week a child will be randomly selected to be our Star of the Week. They will bring home a poster to complete and to bring back to school on Monday of their assigned week. That child is allowed to choose a guest reader from home or someone special to come to the classroom and read a short story. The preferred time for guest readers will be on Fridays from 12:35-12:50. If that day or time doesn’t work for the reader we can schedule a different day that works.
Behavior in the Classroom Classroom behavior is monitored with a reward system called PAWS. PAWS is a school challenge that all of Wilmot uses, however, I take it one step further to use as my classroom behavior plan. Every morning, when the kids come into school, there will be a PAW on their desk. The goal is to keep their PAW for the entire day. The way they keep it is if they demonstrate one or all of these behaviors: Being Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Safe and Being Ready to Learn. At the end of the day, they check off which behavior they believe that they demonstrated, and hand it in to me. They are taken to the office and counted. A PAW can be taken away any time throughout the day if they demonstrate negative behavior. The ultimate goal is to have the Wilmot Wolf, our school mascot, delivered to our classroom for the week. A class picture is taken with the wolf and posted in the hall. It’s a really big deal for the kids! Also, at the end of each trimester, the class with the most PAWS wins a special reward, such as a pizza party or popcorn and movie party, or maybe even an ice cream party!!
Curriculum Reading/Language Arts: Lead 21 • LEAD 21 is a comprehensive literacy program that is designed to meet the needs of 21st Century Learners. Students will be instructed daily using interactive read alouds, guided reading, and independent study stations. This highly individualized program infuses authentic literature, technology, inquiry based-learning, and daily writing instruction and practice to meet the needs of all learners. • In second grade, students will interact with phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension instruction through engaging theme readers and texts, centers activities, unit projects, and a variety of online resources. Social Studies- We cover 4 components of study: Civics, History, Geography and Economics. Lessons are taught whole group with some interactive activities that the children will do individually or within a small group.

Math: Bridges in Mathematics • Bridges is our math program. It facilitates the development of children’s mathematical thinking and reasoning through activities, problems and investigations, in areas such as; patterning, geometry, probability, data analysis, and measurement. There is a balance of basic skills along with mathematical thinking (reasoning, seeing patterns, drawing generalizations and developing strategies for solving problems) . • Bridges Components • Number Corner: an interactive calendar display that introduces and reinforces basic skills • Whole Group Lessons • Work Places: activities to reinforce lessons and provide practice, usually in groups of no more than 6 students. • Assessments • Home Connections: games, projects and / or worksheets to do with the family • Technology Connections: computer activities
Math Facts • Mastering the addition and subtraction math facts is now a requirement for second grade. 40 problems in 2 minutes is the required amount.
