  1. Renewable Energy

  2. Energy Terms • Calorie (Cal) The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius. One calorie equals 4.187 joules or 0.003969 British thermal units (Btu). • British thermal unit (Btu) 1. A unit of energy = 252 calories. 2. energy needed to raise T of 1 pound of H2O one degree F. • Joule - A unit of energy. One joule equals 0.2388 calories. How many Btu? • Watt – Rate of energy conversion. One watt equals one joule of energy per second. • Kilowatt: 1000 • Megawatt: 1,000,000 • Gigawatt: 1,000,000,000 • Terrawatt: 1,000,000,000,000

  6. Geothermal • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_ZGBhy48YI&feature=relmfu • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orvNJWZ6hDQ&feature=related • Geothermal heat… residual solar heat from earth’s origins

  7. Wave Power • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSBACzRE3Gw • Wave power … wind generated and/or tidal

  8. Biodesel • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhpeXuRYJWg • Clean burning alternative, uses sun’s energy processed by plants

  9. Fuel Cells • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esuAlB4NVi0

  10. Research Subject • Wind • Solar • Wave • Hydro • Fuel Cells • Biodesel • Geothermal

  11. Research Expectations • Groups of 3 • Prepare 5-8 minute activity or lecture or demo • Technology: how does it work? • Applications: how can it be used? • Limitations: practical or technical reasons it isn’t widely used • Accessibility: can the average person use it? • Effectiveness: replacement time, waste produced? • Future: next generation applications, etc.
