  2. The type of prescription drug that is more abused are painkillers. Painkillers kill more people than crack and

  3. Overdose deaths from prescription painkillers have skyrocketed during the past decade Prescription painkillers overdoses killed 15,000 people in the US in 2008. This is more than 3 times the 4,000 people killed by these drugs in 1999 (CDC) Painkillers are supposed to kill pain, not people!

  4. In 2010, 2 million people reported using prescription painkillers non-medically for the first time within the last year. That’s nearly 5,500 deaths a day!

  5. Unintentional deaths • More than half of the prescription painkiller deaths are done unintentinal. • People misuse or become addicted to the painkiller pills with out noticing.

  6. Groups • Men are more likely to die from painkiller overdose than women. • Middle-aged adults have the highest prescription painkiller overdose rates • People in rural counties are nearly twice as likely to overdose on prescription painkillers as people in big cities.

  7. Where do they get the painkillers?

  8. “Pill Mills”(THE OTHER SOURCE) • Licensed doctors prescribe patients painkillers that don’t need them for some extra cash, because the patient pays the doctor “under the table”.

  9. On Friday, February 24, a man was charged with practicing medicine in violation of state code, was free on $5,000 bond Friday.

  10. Deaths that happened in Houston, Texas due to Pill Mills • A man was given hydrocodone, xanax and soma (known as the holy trinity) from a Pill Mill, and 2 days later, he died from an overdose. Doctor was charged with a $9.05 million dollar penalty.
