  1. COLOR THEORY

  2. Objective: The student will be able to determine the proper color formulation in color relationships • The Law of Color • Primary Colors • Secondary Colors • Tertiary or Intermediate Colors • Complimentary Colors

  3. The Laws of Color • The laws of color regulate the mixing of dyes and pigment to make other colors • They are based in science and adapted to art • The laws of color serve as guidelines for harmonious color mixing

  4. The Laws of Color • All colors originate or begin from 3 basic colors • These colors are called Primary colors because no color can be mixed with any other color to obtain their color • Without the primary colors there would be no color

  5. Primary Colors • A primary color is a pure pigment • They cannot be created by mixing other colors • In order of dominance • Blue, Red, Yellow • All colors are created from these three pigments

  6. Primary Colors • Red • warm-toned colors • Yellow • warm-toned colors • Blue • cool-toned colors

  7. Redis the medium primary color. Red added to blue-based colors will cause them to appear lighter. Red added to yellow colors will cause them to become darker • Yellowis the lightest of the primary colors. When you add yellow to other colors, the resulting color is lighter and brighter in appearance • Blueis the darkest of the primary colors and is the only cool primary color. In addition to coolness, blue also brings depth or darkness to any color to which it is added.

  8. Primary Color • Relative proportions of primary colors • black • when all 3 primary colors are present in equal proportions • brown • primary colors in the following proportions • yellow -3 • red - 2 • blue - 1

  9. Red Yellow Blue Neutral

  10. Secondary Colors • Created by combining two primary pigments of equal portions • They are cool if they have blue in them • Warm colors have red or yellow in them • They are Orange, Violet, and Green

  11. So when we mix two primary colors : • red + yellow = orange • yellow + blue = green • blue + red = violet

  12. Red Violet Orange Yellow Blue Green Neutral

  13. Tertiary or Intermediate Colors • Created by mixing a primary and secondary color together • These shades are blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange, and yellow-green • 6 new color combinations are formed

  14. Tertiary Colors • yellow + green = yellow green • yellow + orange = yellow orange • blue + green = blue green • blue + violet = blue violet • red + violet = red violet • red + orange =red orange

  15. Red Violet Orange R-O R-V Yellow B-V Blue Y-O B-G Y-G Green Neutral

  16. Tertiary color • Now that we have the knowledge of primary, secondary, and tertiary or intermediate colors we can visualize that by continually intermixing these colors an indefinite number of colors and shades can be created • Remember that tertiary or intermediate colors are located adjacent or beside each other

  17. Complimentary Colors • Two colors opposite each other on the color wheel when mixed will achieve a neutral shade of brown • You will be mixing a primary color with a secondary color that is opposite on the color wheel

  18. Complimentary Colors • The neutral shades of brown are created by mixing: • Red + green = brown • Violet + yellow = brown • Orange + blue = brown

  19. Complimentary Colors • All of these colors are neutral • **Colors opposite each other on the color wheel are Complimentary colors**

  20. So if you have hair with: • Too much red cast • add green base color • Too much green cast • add red base color • Too much brassy ( orange ) cast • add blue base color

  21. So if you have hair with : • Too much blue cast • add yellow/red base color • Too much yellow cast • add violet ( purple ) base color

  22. LOOK for the missing primary Brown = 1 blue + 2 red + 3 yellow • violet - ___red___yellow___blue • orange - __red__yellow__blue • yellow orange - __red__yellow__blue • blue violet - __red__yellow__blue • red orange - __red__yellow__blue • green - __red__yellow__blue

  23. LOOK for the missing primary • yellow green - __red__yellow__blue • red violet - ___red___yellow__blue • yellow - __red__yellow__blue • blue - __red__yellow__blue • greenblue- __red__yellow__blue

  24. Summary • Relationships of color • All colors come from 3 primary colors • red - yellow - blue • Secondary colors are a mixture of two primary colors • green - orange - violet

  25. Summary • Tertiary colors are a mixture of a secondary & primary color • Complimentary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel • they neutralize each other • brown shade is achieved
