  1. Using TEMS Investigation

  2. Using TEMS Investigation Introduction • This presentation shows the basics about how to configure and uses TEMS Investigation UMTS (HSDPA 1.0.3) • The topics cover on this presentation are: • Starting using TEMS • Open Logs • Play Logs • Basic Information • Working with Workspaces • Analyzing Logs • Customizing the Map • Exporting Files • New in TEMS 7.0

  3. Starting using TEMS Using TEMS Investigation The first time that you open TEMS Investigation (TI) you will be using the standard workspace. You will see worksheets with different kind of information such as Overview, Data, Signaling, etc.

  4. Open Logs Using TEMS Investigation To open drive test logs click on Logfile/Open Logfile…

  5. Open Logs con’t Using TEMS Investigation Select the log that you want to analyze and press Open

  6. Play Logs Using TEMS Investigation Once you have opened the drive test log the you can play it

  7. Basic Information Using TEMS Investigation There is not information because all the forms are linked to MS1 by default. For this drive the scanner was connected to MS1. We will change this setting later in the presentation You can see the different available analyzes by click on the different worksheets. The first tab shows an overview of the RF conditions for an determined moment of the drive.

  8. Basic Information con’t Using TEMS Investigation RLC Throughput On this worksheetsyou can see information related to packet such as throughput, session information and HSDPA

  9. Basic Information con’t Using TEMS Investigation On the Signaling worksheetyou can review the layer 2 and layer 3 messages, events and mode report.

  10. Basic Information con’t Using TEMS Investigation This worksheet shows a map with the name, location and sectors azimuth/horizontal beamwidth for the cells on the network. Layers with streets, clusters and RNCs boundaries are shown as well

  11. Basic Information con’t Using TEMS Investigation In this screen is shown the information related to the scanner. You can notice that this worksheet shows more information than the previous one. This is because MS1 was used for the scanner and all the forms are associated to MS1 by default.

  12. Basic Information con’t Using TEMS Investigation A file with information about the cells on the driven area, such as azimuth, scrambling codes, etc, can be defined in order to simplifier the analysis Finally, on this worksheetyou can configure different options for the tool such as command sequence, event definitions and audio indicators. Additionally, you can set the celfile to be used with the drive test logs.

  13. Using TEMS Investigation Working with Workspaces • As you noticed in the previous slides, it is not easy to do an analysis with the default setting for TEMS. • However, TEMS investigation allows the creation/modification of worksheets and workspaces. • Each one of the worksheets in TEMS investigation can be customized. • Information from the different terminals can be shown in the same worksheet . In the same way, each worksheet can be customized to shown information from a unique MS. • More worksheets can be added (up to 10 tabs). • Existing worksheets can be deleted as well (not recommended)

  14. Working with Workspaces cont’ Using TEMS Investigation It says MS1 but is linked to MS2. The title on the forms is not updated automatically One problem that you have noticed on the “Overview” worksheet is that is not showing too much information. That is because all forms are linked to MS1. That can be changed by doing right click on each form and changing the properties. A different MS can be selected. In this case the MS2 has been chosen for Active Set form. Please notice that the titles on the forms has not been updated. This applies to the next slides too.

  15. Working with Workspaces cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can also add a new worksheetsin order to create a view closer to your preferences. Just right click over any tab and the menu for adding/removing worksheet will appear.

  16. Working with Workspaces cont’ Using TEMS Investigation On the new worksheet you can add any form available on the presentation menu. There are five different submenus. GSM and WCDMA refer to information for each on those technologies. Signaling is about L2, L3 messages and mode. Positioning includes form related to maps. Finally, Templates is just some forms with non- predefined settings.

  17. Working with Workspaces cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can different forms to a worksheet. In this case we are going to add forms related to Voice calls. We added the serving/active set. The mobile needs to be changed to MS2. We are selecting MS2 because voice call was recollected using that MS

  18. Working with Workspaces cont’ Using TEMS Investigation This was done by using forms from WCDMA and Positioning submenus. Each form has been linked to MS2. The line chart was changed to include Ec/No information of the second chart instead of GSM info. The map was customized too. Finally, the workspace was saved by clicking on File\Save Workspace as…

  19. Analyzing Logs Using TEMS Investigation This chart shows bars representing RSCP of pilots on the Active Set and lines showing the RSCP for the pilots of the measured neighbours and detected neighbours. Here is shown bars representing Ec/Io of pilots on the Active Set (1st green,2nd blue, 3rd violet) lines showing the RSCP for the pilots of the measured neighbours (orange) and detected neighbours (red). This one illustrates the Ue TX power (blue), the SIR target (green, not available for Samsung) and SIR value (red) . Finally, this chart reports the values of the pilots in the Active Set. It also show the strongest measured neighbours and detected neighbours. Additionally, you can see the speeds and time and for a particular moment of the drive Before analyze the logs, let’s discuss the main elements that we can use for the analysis of the log using TEMS investigation. First let’s take a look of the Line chart

  20. Analyzing Logs cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Service/Active Set form shows SC, Cell Id (if celfile exists), CPICH Ec/No and RSCP. The different colors for Ec/No and RSCP (green good, yellow so-so and red bad) represent visual indicator of the quality. The colors and ranges can be customized. This form shows key information such as Ue TX power, RSSI of the serving cell, Target SIR (upon availability), SIR, RRC state, RAT state and again. On this form, the different events that happened during the drive test are reported. You can click on them in order to get more details about them. The BLER% for the different transport channels is shown on this form Finally, this form provide information about the L3 messages. Again you can click on a message to get more details. Now, let’s review other elements such as Serving/Active Set + Neighbours, Radio Parameters, Events, BLER, and Layer 3 Messages.

  21. Analyzing Logs cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can replay the log and observe the different charts, messages, measurements and the map in order to make your analysis…

  22. Before the last removal, RSCP was good and Ec/NO was acceptable The cells in the active set are indicated by blue lines that go from the cell to the selected point. The service sector is painted on green (DXU0057Z). Additionally, in the Serving/Active Cell are specified as AS. You can see that the sector DXU3013Z is out of the Active Set window, that is why is removed later Analyzing Logs cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can get information about an specific point by clicking on the line chart. All the forms are synchronized. … or play the whole log and move back or forward by using the scroll control on the line chart. Let’s move the scroll bottom back to the first drop call and analyze it

  23. Analyzing Logs cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can expand the map to see more details of the drop call. Notice that the cells in the Active Set do not look like the ideal servers. DXU4325W is closer to the Ue and should be a better server, at least, than DXU3013Z. It looks like DXU3013Y is over shooting.

  24. Analyzing Logs cont’ Using TEMS Investigation After the last radio link removal, the Ec/Io of the Service cell, DXU0057 degrades so fast that the SHO to a better cell did not happen even tough e1a messages were sent. BLER is high too. The call is dropped because interference.

  25. Customizing the Map Using TEMS Investigation To customize the map you have to click Geoset Manager. It will open a screen where you can add map layers in a similar way that MapInfo. Click on the layer control add layers by clicking on the Add… bottom.

  26. Customizing the Map cont’ Using TEMS Investigation The layer control works similar to the one for MapInfo. You can change the display and labels options by pressing on the corresponding bottoms.

  27. Customizing the Map cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Add and modify as many layer as you want and save them as a Geoset by clicking on File\Save Geoset

  28. Customizing the Map cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Finally, in order to load into TEMS investigation the layer that you have just created, click on Position Map bottom and select the new Geoset.

  29. Customizing the Map cont’ Using TEMS Investigation You can select what metric you want to plot on the map. For this case we selected Ec/No (inner dots) and RSCP (outer dots) for serving CPICH. On this options you can select whether to show in a special color (green) the service cell and other cells in active set (purple). Neighbours are represented by lines. Also, TEMS can display lines that go from the AS cell to the point. You can select what metric you want to plot on the map. For this case we selected Ec/No (inner dots) and RSCP (outer dots) for serving CPICH. Finally, different event can be plotted as well; like the dropped call shown in the map Additional feature related to mapping can be found by pressing the Add / Edit Themes bottom. On this screen you can select different way to show your drive test data on the map.

  30. Exporting Files Using TEMS Investigation Select the format for exportation file. On this example we select Text file To export files press on LogFile\Esport Logfile. The main screen for log exportation will appear. You can select different format for the export such as MapInfo tab-files, Text (use for Omega), Planet, etc.

  31. Exporting Files cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Finally, press ok to finish apply the profile that you have loaded For instance for this field you can decide whether to show all the mobiles used during the drive test or just one You have to select which fields you want to export and press > to added to the output You can edit the information that you want export for the field You can save your selection as file to future use or… …you can load an existing profile for the exportation file. This case we are loading the profile using for Omega tool Then select the fields that you want to export by clicking setup. You can modify the information to be exported on each fields. Finally you can create a profile with the options that you have selected or you can load a profile that you created before.

  32. Exporting Files cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Select the drive test logs… … you can export all log in one file by selecting this option… … select the output folder… …finally press ok to finish with the file selection!!! … or define a common prefix or suffix for the file name… After you have finished setting up the format of exportation file, you have to select the files that you have to export and the output folder for the file. You can also merge all the logs in one exportation file.

  33. Exporting Files cont’ Using TEMS Investigation Press this bottom to export the log files This percentage indicates the status of the exportation To finalize, just click on the run exportation bottom to finalize the exportation. A screen with the results will be shown at the end of the process
