  1. Roger F Suchyta, MD, FAAP Associate Executive Director March 16, 2014 ICD-10-CM

  2. ICD-10-CM Implementation Date Firmly set October1, 2014 • All HIPAA covered entities are required to switch • Are you ready?

  3. ICD-9 • ICD-9 first published by WHO in 1975 • ICD-9-CM has been in continuous use in the US since 1979 • Most of the world has been using ICD-10 since 1994… • …so we are already behind!

  4. Why the switch? • ICD-9-CM not robust enough to meet needs • Some content no longer clinically accurate A lot has changed in 30 years! • Structure limits ability to expand to meet new demands for codes • Difficult to compare state, national, international morbidity and mortality data

  5. ICD-10 History • 1994: Released by WHO • Jan 1999: Adopted for reporting US mortality data • Jan 2009: CMS published Final Rule for US Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) • Oct 1, 2014: Effective for all encounters for diagnoses and inpatient resources reporting

  6. ICD-10-CM Benefits • Reflects advances in medicine, medical technology • Uses current medical terminology and classification of diseases • More specificity: Laterality and episode of care • Flexible • Can quickly incorporate emerging diagnoses • More room for expansion • Supports improved public health surveillance and epidemiological research
