  2. Proposal for Platform Energy Model 802.15.4g/e IEEE 802.15.4g/e Joint Task Group

  3. Contents • Motivation • Model Basis • Basic Model parameters • Simplified Example

  4. Motivation for Energy Consumption Model • Requirements such as “20 year battery life” have no meaning other than to provide motivation for lower energy consumption. • Energy consumption is highly dependent on physical implementation both hardware and software. It is dependent on the assumptions made by the proposer. • A common platform energy model can be used to evaluate proposal for both phy and mac just as a channel model can be used to evaluate phy/mac performance and reliability. • An Energy consumption model may not accurately reflect optimizations a particular designer might make but can provide a common language and allow us to communicate with one another better and to evaluate proposals better.

  5. Model Basis Environment Temperature Transmit PA Receive LAN Security Microprocessor Memory ADC/DAC MAC User Application Channel PER Battery Capacity Leakage Efficiency Clock Accuracy

  6. Model Parameters • Platform states • Sleep, Warmup, TX, RX, Application, MAC Processing. • Battery • Capacity, Efficiency(Temp,Current), Self Discharge(Temp) • Clock • Accuracy(Temperature, Aging, Vibration) • Environment • Temperature • Channel • PER, Loss of network

  7. Batteries [1] Example: Saft LS17500 A cell Li-SOCL2 A cell 3.6V 3.6AH -60C to +85C Self discharge 1%/yr @ 20C [1] [2] [1] [1] Saft LS17500 data sheet [2] http://www.mpoweruk.com/performance.htm

  8. Parameters

  9. Example of Use • Decide on relevant operation interval. • Determine and list operational assumptions. • Determine time spent in each state • Determine assumptions for current consumption and efficiency for each state. • Calculate life

  10. What is needed • Agreement on appropriate complexity for metric. • Agreement on what operating parameters should be fixed, what can be adjusted by the proposer. • How the model should be used. • How assumptions are communicated.

  11. Discussion?
