    1. JMU Challenge 2010 Engaging Students in Creative Collaboration

    2. Judging criteria Identify a solution to a current environmental problem on the JMU campus. Environmental Impact Innovation Feasibility Collaboration

    3. Energy Conservation

    4. Shedding Some Light Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Thomas Bruc, Engineering Kevin Coleman, Statistics Mat Hyunwoo, Biology Marybeth Jones, Chemistry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9S_ayuX_Fc&feature=player_embedded How many students rely on desk lights? Students use overhead, fluorescent lights. The $310,155 cost savings is approximately 27% of JMU’s electric bill. There are many things beyond our and the student’s control--outdoor lights, emergency lighting in the building, building equipment, etc.

    5. Xlerator Hand Dryers Matt Corbett, SMAD Matt Jeanes, Computer Science Neil McNulty, Undeclared Chris Nutbrown, Engineering http://www.exceldryer.com/PressKit/TV-Terry-Bradshaw.php http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P22_J0RtuQ “We have actually been planning to install hand dryers in one of the sorority houses this summer. ” Product: Excel HO-IW Cost: $1,800 per unit materials and labor The unit that FM priced is the Excel HO-IW (mid priced, fully automatic, and is activated when hands are placed under the air-outlet).  We would have tremendous savings in paper towel and trash bags, both major expenses for us in custodial supplies.  We also have issues with trash collecting in the bathrooms over weekends when housekeeping staff are not available for removal, so we are hoping that a transition to hand dryers might help that situation as well.  We would also be able to eliminate weekend trash removal in Eagle, one of our bigger halls. 6. Water Bottle Filler All fountains on campus are not the same, so installation cost varies. $700 - $2,400 per water cooler + bottle filling station What do current building codes allow? How much will it get used? Engineering majors: Jeff Drees, Paulina Hoang, Devin Imholte, Alex Mancil and Math/Chemistry major- Warren Sealock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQcVkQ4L0f0

    7. Recycling

    8. Recycling Bins in Dorms Audrey Smith, Cp. Science Erika Bishop, Math Stephanie Gill, Math Office of Residence Life provides the recycling bins pictured in the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRlEa0m-oRY We already provide either a recycling bin or bag to each room. We switched to washable bags that can be collected and washed in a washing machine.  This year we are offering the opportunity to residents to take the recycling bags/bins with them at the end of the year to encourage them to recycle at their next residence.  If they don’t want them, we are collecting them and will rewash for next year.

    9. Recycling the breeze Discarded Newspaper Brett Abrams, Management Jason Clancy, Management Jason Everritt, Management David Herrell, Management MGT 450 Creativity Class Project – Dr. Eric Stark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNT6GdBhSfk Great idea! Proved that solution of making recycling bins more convenient to students didn’t work.

    10. Awareness & Social Change

    11. Kick Yourself Campaign The Ripple Effect Chris Carter, Management Tyler Charnock, Management Andreea Mitea, Int’l Business Nathan Seyler, Management MGT 450 Creativity Class Project – Dr. Eric Stark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGxcyjsV_ho Raising awareness and changing social behaviors is key to achieving environmental sustainability long-term.

    12. All-you-can-eat sustainability One-Plate-Rule Brittany Bailey, Social Work Evan Botello, Political Science Ranna Mohajer, Int’l Business Brian Sham, Quant. Finance Alyson Toole, Int’l Business http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07k1FMPDRMQ Enforcing a one-plate-rule is not feasible Students get very upset--they feel like they have paid for all-you-care-to-eat. Great opportunity to reduce waste as a culture shift, but not a mandate.  Health regulations do not allow patrons to use dirty plates for seconds.
