Additional Facts about Walt • As a child, Walt would draw pictures and sell them to the neighbors to make extra money. • He lied about his age and joined the Red Cross at age 16 to help the war effort during WWI • He married one of his first employees, pen and ink artist Lillian Bound. They had 2 daughters. The train at Disneyland, The Lily Bell, is named after her. • Mickey Mouse was almost named Mortimer. Lillian thought it sounded pompous, and suggested Mickey instead. • Disney personally won more Academy Awards , and had more Academy Award nominations, than anyone else in history. (Total number won – 22) • Walt Disney founded the California Institute of the Arts, a college level professional school for all of the performing arts.
