  5. Inside the Brain: An Interactive Tour The Thinking Business: Brain Tour The Secret Life of the Brain (PBS) (Links on the Wiki: Session 3)

  6. The Brain in the News

  7. Brain-Friendly Teaching Strategies • Each One, Teach One (CLICCCK) • Neural Networking • hands-on/minds-on engagement (Coloring Sheets) • Graphic Organizers • (Structure of Knowledge) • Brain in the News • Structured Review (Cliccck) • Movement (Neural Networking) • Kinesthetic Activity (hand model) • Metacognition (what do you remember and why?) • Storytelling • Others…?

  8. The Neuron The basic functional unit of the nervous system; We are born with, and retain throughout our lives, approximately 100 billion neurons; 30,000 fit on the head of a pin

  9. Every thought that you think… Every action that you take… Google Image Source: www.physics.lsa.umich.edu Is the result of neurons communicating with each other!

  10. The Cell Body Has a nucleus which contains DNA, chromosomes, and other genetic material

  11. The Axon The fiber extension from the cell body that carries an electrical impulse (action potential); Most are very short (less than one mm); Others can be up to one meter in length

  12. The Axon Terminals Also called axon “bulbs”; located at ends of axon branches; Hold “pockets” that contain neurotransmitters for dispersal upon stimulation

  13. The Myelin Sheath The fatty, waxy coating that forms around each axon; made of glial cells; protects and insulates the axon; speeds the electrical impulse; Myelination follows a preset developmental pattern- from birth to about age 25 or 30

  14. The Dendrites Strand-like fibers that extend from the cell body; They contain receptor sites for receiving neurotransmitters from other neurons; Dendrites grow and branch throughout our lives, depending upon experience and environment

  15. The Synapse

  16. Neurons and How They Work (Discovery Channel) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5cab4hgmoE

  17. Learning is the act of making… and strengthening… connections between neurons!

  18. It’s time for a quiz! Google Image Source: http://www.amazon.com/Home-Alone-Macaulay-Culkin/dp/B00000K3CL
