  2. 2 The PDAL is a log in which you can record information about your professional development each month. We are asking you to fill out the PDAL for each of your professional development activities each month. We also ask that you fill out a log each month even if you did not participate in any professional development activities. We know that you are very busy, so we will remind you to complete the PDAL each month via e-mail and telephone. The following pages should help answer any questions you have about using the PDAL. Thank you for your time and help with this important study!

  3. First, type in the PDAL website address into your browser. (if are using AOL or another service provider and are having problems accessing the site, we recommend opening and using Internet Explorer or Netscape along with AOL to use the PDAL) 3 3 http://www.edoceon.com/door/pdal/ Type in your UserID and Password from the instructions page sent with your PDAL introduction letter; then press ‘go’ ATeacher *****

Be sure your current Email is listed. ATeacher@sample.edu Check that your subject is checked. Should be the same as you reported on for the Survey of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) Click when you are finished Change your password if you wish

  5. 5 This is the ‘My PDAL’ page and is the main page you will be directed to when you sign on to the PDAL. You will use it to create activity logs about your professional development activities. The current month will appear by default. Use the pull-down to select a different month. If you DID participate in any professional development activities for the month listed, then click this link (go to page 7). If you did NOT participate in any professional development activities for the month listed, then click this link (go to page 6).

  6. 6 This text will appear to indicate that you have no PD activities for the month and means that you have completed the PDAL for that month (go to page 15). If, however, you remember that you did in fact have a PD activity, click this button and you will be asked to create an activity (go to page 7).

  7. 7 There are 3 ways to create an activity log (if you wish to employ more than one method, please return to this page after creating your first set of activity logs): 1. A list of activities that you have previously created will appear. Check the boxes of the activities you participated in for the month you are reporting on, then click ‘Add logs’ (go to page 9). 2. A list of activities that have taken place in your area will also appear. Check the boxes of the activities you participated in for the month you are reporting on, then click ‘Add logs’ (go to page 9). 3. If your PD activity is not listed, then click this link to create a new one (go to page 8).

  8. 8 Creating a new activity Add the name of your activity here (do not use “quotes,” periods, or question marks) CSU - Math 580 Click the appropriate button to indicate whether this activity will continue beyond the current month (e.g., a college course) Click this button once to add your activity

  9. 9 You have now created your activity logs for the month. Next, click the name of the activity to begin answering questions on the activity. If the link does not say ‘100% complete,’ then you still have questions to answer (go to page 10). You can always add a new activity by clicking this link. If you would like to delete an activity you made by mistake, please call the PDAL help line.

  10. 10 This line will show you which activity you are reporting on. The MENU allows you to see where you are in the activity log and to move to a different section if you need (otherwise use the ‘NEXT’ button below) If you need to stop your reporting and wish to complete at another time, click this link any time and your answers will be saved for your return. *This is the first page of the section asking you questions specifically about the PD activity you selected. Click these buttons to go to the next or previous pages (do NOT use the ‘back’ and ‘forward’ buttons on the browser)

  11. 11 This is a sample of the types of questions that will be asked about your activity. Shows you which page you are on Answer questions by checking the boxes, filling in text, or using the pull-down menus. An asterik (*) will appear if you forgot to respond to an item. Click ‘cancel’ on the pop-up to return to the item and respond. Click this button to go to the next page

  12. 12 This page indicates you are at the end of the activity log. The status bar indicates what percentage of the activity log questions you have answered. ***** Once you have answered all the questions in the activity log, enter your password and click ‘Finalize’. You will then be brought back to the ‘My PDAL page’

  13. 13 When you have completed ALL your activity log entries, the My PDAL page will show ‘100%’ next to each activity name. If you have not completed the questions (less than 100%), you can return to the activity log by clicking on the link. Once you have completed the activity log entries for all your activities in a given month, click this button to finalize the month.

  14. 14 You can still view your activity log entries, but you will not be able to change them. After you have finalized the month, this text will appear. If you need to open up the month to add an activity or to change your responses, please call the help line (1-800 –229-0495)

  15. 15 A definition of ‘informal activities’ can be found in the glossary. Please click this button to answer questions about your informal PD activities for the month. Do this every month.

  16. 16 Answer questions exactly how you answered questions about your other PD activities and be sure to finalize (see page 12). I took a trip to a historic site and used my pictures in a lesson.

  17. 17 SPECIAL FEATURES You can call the helpline to speak with someone who can assist you with problems you are having with your PDAL. Or, you can click on the picture to send a question by email to rjacobson@air.org.
