  17. Should we be concerned about biodiversity? What we know:The Earth is losing species at an alarming rate • Some scientists estimate that as many as 3 species per hour are going extinct and 20,000 extinctions occur each year. • When species of plants and animals go extinct, many other species are affected.

Population & species level conservation • Biodiversity hot spot: small area with an exceptional concentration of species • Endemic species: species found nowhere else • Endangered species: organism “in danger of extinction” • Threatened species: likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future • Bioremediation: use of living organisms to detoxify polluted systems

Human Impact • Biological magnification: trophic process in which retained substances become more concentrated at higher levels • Greenhouse effect: warming of planet due to atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide • Ozone depletion: effect of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) released into the atmosphere • Habitat destruction
