Introduction • Preparing students for College and Career Readiness is the central purpose behind the Common Core State Standards • 6 Instructional Shifts: • More informational text • Literacy in History and Science-broad curriculum • Increased Text Complexity • Text-dependent questions • Argumentation with text-based evidence • Focus on academic vocabulary

  4. What is the role of the elementary school in getting all students “College and Career Ready?”

  5. College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards • Anchor the document and define general literacy expectations for college and workforce readiness. • These were developed first, and the standards were back-mapped from the anchors. • Look at the anchor standards, read the side bars as well. Add-on to table discussion about role of elementary school in getting students “college and career ready.”

  6. Take a Look • Take a look through the reading standards to get acquainted with the format.

  7. Vertical Alignment • Look through Reading Standard 6 from K-12 • Copy key words and phrases that illustrate the build of each standard from grade-level to grade-level • Implications for our school

  8. 6th grade RL.6 (Reading Literature, standard 6) • Explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text.

  10. Assessment • Timeline 2011-13 Intro to Common Core Begin to up text complexity, rigor, writing, content reading 2012-13 Piloting 2013-14 Field Testing 2014-15 Assessments count as part of accountability system

Smarter Balanced Assessments • Must measure deeper understanding and application of concepts in both ELA / Literacy and Mathematics • This requires a variety of item types • Selected response • Short constructed response • Extended constructed response • Technology enhanced • Performance tasks

Sample Performance Task: gr. 4 • Phase 1: Read prompts and supporting resource material: facts about sharks (includes reading and links- may also include video clips); Write notes in graphic organizer to plan their writing • Phase 2: Write an opinion piece- Which shark would you study if you were a shark scientist and why? Explain your reasons. Be sure to include shark facts to help you explain your choice.
