  1. Computing Overview Amber Boehnlein

  2. Jefferson Lab Agenda Software and Computing is recognized as integral to the success of the Jefferson Lab Mission Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software 12 GeV S&C Review 2018

  3. Organization and Resources Staff is CS professionals, computational scientists and physicists at different career levels. EXP effort is self-reported and includes postdocs Application support for common and community software is ‘best effort’ by EXP IT focuses on supporting the Hardware. Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software 12 GeV S&C Review 2018

  4. Experimental Halls at Jefferson Lab • Experimental Program Planned for the Next Ten Years • All Halls have collected 12 GeV Data and have operational experience to report that influence computing needs Hall B – understanding nucleon structure via generalized parton distributions Hall D – exploring origin of confinement by studying exotic mesons Hall C– precision determination of valence quark properties in nucleons /nuclei Hall A – form factors, future new experiments (e.g., SoLID and MOLLER) Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software

  5. A/C Halls Software and Computing • Operational experience and path publication for the current program (Hansen & Jones) • Towards the future: Focus on Super BigBite Spectrometer (Riordan) Hall C– precision determination of valence quark properties in nucleons /nuclei Hall A – form factors, future new experiments (e.g., SoLID and MOLLER) Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software

  6. Hall D/Glue X • Operational experience and path publication for the current program (Meyer) • Offsite computing experience • OSG and NERSC • Towards the future: High Intensity Run • Talks by Meyer and Lawrence Hall D – exploring origin of confinement by studying exotic mesons Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software

  7. Hall B and Focus on CLAS12 • Overview of the Hall B program and Computing requirements(Stepanyan) • Commissioned in Spring 2018 dueto delivery of the solenoid • Deep Dive intoCLAS12 Software and computing (De Vita & Heyes) Hall B – understanding nucleon structure via generalized parton distributions Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software

  8. Experimental Computing Performance Plan • Responded to DOE recommendation to assess computing needs for Experimental and Theory programs • Experimental program: Spreadsheet Model projections (Heyes (II)) • key parameters benchmarked against actual performance • Construct run scenarios • Utilize mix of on-site and off-site resources (Watson, Philpot, Meyer/Lawrence) • On-site resources added to farm in August 2018 Projections Usage (Nov 2017-Nov 2018) Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software 12 GeV S&C Review 2018

  9. Jefferson Lab Agenda • The era of 12 GeV Science is coinciding with a revolution in computational techniques and disciplines • Machine Learning • Data Science • Exascale Computing Project Introduction: Jefferson Lab Computing and Software 12 GeV S&C Review 2018

  10. Looking forward…. • Will be ramping up to 37 weeks of physics running per year • Hurray! • With the 12 GeV start-up behind us, this review can look forward towards the 12 GeV program and beyond. • Realizing the science requires integration between theory, experiment and advanced data science techniques • Three talks on the Future Outlook and gaps: • Experimental program (Wood) • Scientific Computing (Watson) • Links to Phenomenology (Sata) • Have also instituted a ‘Grand Challenge’ for computing by grouping existing efforts and LDRD around an organizing principle. • Intended to provide a basis for computing and software for the far future, with selected deployments in the late 12 GeV Program An integrated whole-experiment approach to detector readout and analysis towards scientific output will take advantage of multiple existing and emerging technologies.
