FACTS ON COAL • State and local government receive nearly 9 billion dollars each year in revenues • Coal provided the energy which fueled the industrial resolution of the 19th century • The world has more coal than any other fossil fuel • About 25% of the worlds coal is from the US
Coal mining • Mine workers use surface mining to reach coal beds close to Earths surface. • Surface mines produce more than two-thirds the coal in the US • Once mined, coal is usually burned for heat or to make electricity • The average coal miner is 45 years old and has 20 years of experience
Disadvantages of coal • Burning coal can create a significant pollution problems • It cannot be recycled • Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas • When people dig for coal, many trees are cut down • Coal is nonrenewable and fast depleting • Mining of coal leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment
Advantages of coal • Coal is one of the most abundant sources of energy, more so than oil and natural gasses • Coal can be found in lots of places in the world and there is still plenty in the UK • Coal can be easily transported to the power stations • Burning coal can produce useful by- products • Coal is a relatively cheap energy source • Widely and easily distributed all over the world
How coal is mined • Mining- the process of moving coal from the ground • Types of mining: underground mining surface mining • When coal is less than 125 feet under the surface it is mined through surface mining • When it is deeper it is removed by underground mining
Surface mining • Surface mining is used wen coal is located close to the surface • In 2005 there were six surface mines in Illinois • The surface mine produced 3,800,000 tons of coal • Surface mining deals with soil and rock mine techniques where levels of ground are removed and as mineral deposits are exposed and processed • Surface is the opposite of underground mining
Underground mining • Underground mining is used when coal is deep in the earth. • In underground mines, not all of the coal is mined. • The coal in underground mines are put on to conveyor belts that take the coal up. • There are 3 types of underground mines -slope -drift -shaft
Fun facts • Coal is considered non- renewable because it takes 1million years to create • China is the main supplier of coal to the world and the US is second • Coal was formed about 300 million years ago • There are four primary types of coal -lignite - subbituminous -bituminous -anthracite
How coal is used • Most electricty comes from burning coal. • Coal is produced to electricity create byproducts, which produce things like soil, cement, and road construction materials.
