West Virginia AP Goals Rationale: Currently, West Virginia ranks 46th in the nation in AP student achievement, with just 9.4% of West Virginia students earning a score of 3+ on an AP Exam before leaving high school. • The Goals: • Increase AP participation to at least 45% of the 2018 graduating cohort class • Increase AP performance to 25% of the 2018 graduating cohort class • Close participation and performance gaps for African-American students by 2018

  4. Debunking Myths • Myth: AP is for students who always get good grades • Myth: AP courses are too stressful • Myth: AP courses are only for students planning to attend college • Myth: It’s all about the score

  5. Access to AP - Common Barriers: • Lack of awareness • Lack of preparation/support (student, teacher) • Restrictive policies • Entrance Criteria • Exit Criteria • Students with potential not identified • Insufficient motivation/incentive
