  3. Problem • The majority of handheld navigation devices rely on GPS • GPS requires a clear signal from satellites • A dropped signal could mean that an individual becomes lost

  4. Solution • Develop a handheld navigation device which can use, but does not require, a GPS signal to determine position Sensors Memory Accelerometer Processor GPS Receiver Gyroscope LCD UI

  5. Design Norms • Transparency • Report critical information • Caring • Saves lives by helping lost individuals • Trust • Be reliable and accurate enough to be trusted

  6. Major Hurdles • Algorithms to convert sensor readings to positions accurately • Reducing errors in sensor readings • Keep the current draw low to achieve the required battery life

  7. Current Activities • Research • Developing a platform for data acquisition • Customer communication • Electronic component selection • PPFS
