  6. EM Internship Program • Prep course readies students • Students required to complete 240 hours of internship experience • Approximately 20 students involved in internships each semester • Interns work for municipalities, non-profits, private business

  7. NOURISHING throughEM Internship Program… • 65% of internships are paid • Build cross-campus relations with Career Center, University’s Internship Office, Counseling and Testing Services • 100% of interns meet or exceed employers expectations - necessary technical and communication skills

  8. Emergency Management Internship Program Intern watches as the American Red Cross responds to a fire Intern works in local hospital’s Safety and Security Department

  9. SUSTAINING throughEOC Lab Capabilities • 25 computer workstations • GIS capability • E-team software • ESA (External Situational Awareness) • Hurrtrak and Hurrevac modeling • Portable Smartboard • Quadprojector

  10. New EOC Lab/ Courses • EOC Design and Operations • Exercise Design • Technology in Emergency Management • Hurricane Planning and Operations • Exercises for various courses

  11. SUSTAINING through IAEM-Student Chapter at UNT Denton County CERT IAEM-SC Student Volunteers The Texas Homeland Security Conference

  12. Challenges • University aspiring for Tier I status • Emphasis on research/ balancing teaching and mentoring • Only four core faculty • Advising 9 PhD students with EM • Garner funding for TAs and RAs • Reducing Undergraduate Enrollment

Moving Forward…… • Aggressively pursuing research grants • Recently received two NSF-RAPID grants • TX State funding from HHSC • Global focus - International partnerships • Turkey, Thailand, Mexico, India, China • Involving undergraduates in research • Seeking Pvt. Sector funding for EOC lab • Increasing Number of Core Faculty
