  1. FOOD BY MAX NAISMITH

  2. FOOD “Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body”

  3. WHERE FOOD CAME FROM • Historically people would hunt for their food but now they don’t need too because we grow our food on farms and today most of the food energy consumed in the world is supplied through the food industry. • Food normally comes from plants or animals. Food comes in all different kinds you have milk and dairy foods, protein, fats and carbohydrates.

  4. MILK AND DAIRY • Dairy is in a lot of foods like milk, cheese and butter. Milk mostly comes from cows or goats but it also comes from buffalo, sheep ,camels and horses. • If you have too much dairy you can get diabetes but the right amount can give you stronger bones so you have less chance of breaking any of your bones.

  5. TASTE Humans have five different types of tastes: • Sweet • Sour • Salty • Bitter • Umami As humans have evolved the tastes that provide the most energy are the most pleasant to eat.

  6. SWEET This is usually the most pleasant having the taste or flavour of sugar or honey and is usually found in cakes and confectionery

  7. SOUR This is a sharp or tangy taste caused by acids and is usually found in citrus fruits such as lemons and limes.

  8. SALTY Salt is essential for all animal life however it can taste very unpleasant. There are three main different types of salt unrefined (seasalt), refined (table salt) and iodised (mixed salt).

  9. BITTER This is usually an sharp and unpleasant taste and is usually found in dark unsweetened chocolate, caffeine and lemon rind

  10. UMAMI This is the Japanese word for “delicious” and is not very well known in Western Cuisine but is used widely in Asian Cuisine. It is meaty and rich in flavour and is found in mushrooms and salmon.

  11. WHAT DID I MAKE • I made a variety of different foods to try to include all of the different tastes and nutrients • Fruit Salad • Griddled chicken with bacon and cheese and potato wedges. • Sponge with jam and coconut. • Pineapple, Marshmallow, Cream and Flake Dessert • Malteser Tray Bake • Mars bar Tray Bake

  12. GRIDDLED CHICKEN WITH BACON AND CHEESE SERVED WITH HANDCUT POTATO WEDGES First I washed the chicken and then wrapped it in clingfilm and then used a rolling pin to flatten it out. It was then placed straight onto the hot griddle and cooked on both sides giving it a chargrilled look and taste. I then grilled two slices of lean bacon and placed this on top of the chicken and then sprinkled some low fat grated cheese on top.

  13. GRIDDLED CHICKEN WITH BACON AND CHEESE SERVED WITH HANDCUT POTATO WEDGES For the potato wedges I washed some large potatoes and cut them into wedges. Then I placed them in a bowl and added some garlic granules, salt, pepper and olive oil and mixed this through. Then I placed in over for 35 minutes at a high heat and then served with the griddled chicken.

  14. FRUIT SALAD This was a large selection of different fruits which I put together in a bowl with some natural apple juice

  15. SPONGE WITH COCONUT AND JAM TOPPING I made a sponge using butter, self raising flour, castor sugar, 2 eggs and some baking powder. Put all ingredients in bowl and mixed together then poured mixture into cake tin and put in oven for 25-30 minutes. When sponge out of oven placed on wire rack to cool and then spread jam over the top and dusted with coconut – delicious!!

  16. PINEAPPLE, MARSHMALLOW, CREAM AND FLAKE DESSERT This is a really simple dish. Put one tin of crushed pineapples into large mixing bowl and then add one packet of marshmallows cut into small pieces and then a carton of double cream whipped. Once all ingredients in bowl mix together and then sprinkle chocolate flake over top. Placed in fridge to cool.

  17. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED • When I began this topic I had spent a lot of time in the kitchen since I was about four years old with my mum learning to bake but I had never really made anything else. • I have learnt so much through this project about the different types and flavours of food and at the same time have really enjoyed making all the different dishes.
