  2. What Is Dual Diagnosis? The term dual diagnosis refers to a situation where a person suffers from alcoholism/drug addiction and a co-occurring mental illness. This term is synonymous with co-occurring mental health disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), four million Americans are living with dual diagnosis. Sadly, many who struggle with dual diagnosis only pursue treatment for their addiction and negate seeking additional treatment for their mental health disorder and prevents them from progressing in their recovery. 24/7 HELPLINE (855) 980-1736

  3. Symptoms Of Dual Diagnosis Symptoms of dual diagnosis include those associated with both drug addiction and mental illnesses. It is often difficult to differentiate between the two sometimes because both alcoholism/drug addiction and some mental health disorders share common signs to some degree. It is easier to properly diagnose a patient when he or she is no longer under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some common signs of drug addiction in next slide: 24/7 HELPLINE (855) 980-1736

  5. Dual Diagnosis Options Few drug treatment programs specialize in treating co-occurring mental health conditions and drug addiction. Dual diagnosis treatment programs combine the most effective aspects of substance abuse treatment and mental health care. Treatments for both co-occurring conditions run parallel and are optimal when combined with the use of an integrated drug and alcohol treatment program. 24/7 HELPLINE (855) 980-1736

  6. Inpatient Treatment Inpatient treatment programs for patients with dual diagnosis offers the patients a clean and safe place to stay during their early sobriety. It provides them with a clean and safe place to stay while they attend recovery groups and rehab therapy. While staying at the facility, they are subject to its rules and regulations and submit drug screenings regularly. This form of treatment can often be the most beneficial because it separates the addict from its old environment with a new one that is recovery-centered and holds them accountable.

  7. Outpatient Treatment Outpatient treatment offers some of the same benefits as an inpatient facility except it allows patients to reside outside of the facility. These are often referred to as intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. They offer clients access to recovery-centered groups and individual therapy sessions. This option is often used by patients subsequently following their completion of an inpatient treatment program. These programs offer patients the option to continue treatment once after complete their initial stay and reside in a transitional living or sober living environment.

  8. Recovery Groups In California Recovery groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are 12-step based programs that have helped millions of alcoholics and drug addicts to recover from their addiction and help others in the recovery process. Both have no dues or fees to join and provide members with meetings every day of the week. Many other 12-step groups have been established in the past few decades which run on the same principles as these two groups and can appeal to alcoholics and addicts from all walks of life. info@californiadualdiagnosishelpline.com
