  9. The Success of PBIS is Directly Linked to Adult Behavior and Expectations • “Simply put, if the staff expect students to achieve and behave appropriately, they will. Conversely, if the staff expect the students to under-achieve and behave inappropriately, they will.” • Geoff Colvin

  10. What is a Schoolwide Expectations Matrix and Why is it Important? • After a school decides on 3-4 positively stated schoolwide behavior expectations they begin the development of a schoolwide expectations Matrix. • The matrix is a list of specific behaviors/skills for each setting in relation to the 3-4 expectations. • All students and staff will be responsible for following the behaviors listed on the Matrix. • The matrix is the school’s social skills behavior curriculum that will be taught to all students in the settings in which those behaviors should be used. • The matrix is a foundational document for your SW-PBS efforts and becomes the basis for all future work as you plan and implement your SW-PBS system. • The Matrix reflects the language and culture of each individual school. It will become the language all staff use when they teach students the expectations. Additionally it is the language used when they remind students, when they recognize students and when they correct students. • Given the importance of the matrix, it is suggested that new teams take as much time as needed to seek and consider feedback from staff, students, families and the community when developing the matrix.

  11. How it works (J. Crawford)Examples of Elementary, Middle, and High presented Building Matrices • All Buildings should have a matrix – it is a foundational component of PBIS • All Buildings should review it to be sure that it incorporates district-wide expectations (Common Language) • The matrix should be taught to all staff/students in the building, publicized widely, and referenced regularly when re-teaching needs to occur.

  12. When asked for the PBIS Matrix, the TILT Committee received them from… • McCluer South Berkeley • McCluer • Berkeley Middle School • Robinwood • Cross Keys • Combs • Central • Johnson-Wabash • Halls Ferry • Parker Road • Thank you for your input!

  16. Levels of Matrix Understanding and Implemenation • “Here’s our matrix, these are our universals, and this is how it applies in all the areas of our school.” (All schools reaching this level is our goal in FFSD) • “Here’s our matrix, and I’m not sure how it applies to everything in our school.” • “I have heard of the matrix and I think somebody created one…. I am not sure where it is or what it means…” • “What’s a matrix and why do we need one?”
