  2. Liberty • Individuals have certain inalienable rights (natural rights theory) • Individuals may act as they wish, so long as they do not infringe upon others’ rights

  3. Equality • There should be no social restrictions on achievement • Everyone is equal before the law and has a say in governance

  4. Fraternity • Nationalism becomes the binding force • The nation provides for social welfare and in return, citizens serve the nation by paying taxes, obeying the draft, obeying laws, etc. (Social Contract Theory)
