  1. Introduction to Student Counseling and Health Services Dr. Lowell G. Roddy, Director Fall 2011

  2. Student Counseling Services Mission Our primary goal is to promote a healthy campus environment and enhance student learning. We want to help students remove the barriers to success in school and in life.

  3. Counseling is not the same as the services given by many high school guidance counselors. College counseling is a mental health service rather than an academic service.

  4. Why seek counseling? • Want to feel better about themselves • Continuation of mental health services that started prior to college • Awareness that life seems to be a little “off” • Feeling “blue,” “low,” frustrated, angry, lonely, frightened • Awareness that past events still haunt you

  5. Typical Concerns • Developmental/family issues: fear and guilt, anger, frustration, family crisis • Personal issues: anxiety, loneliness, depression, anger, guilt, low self-esteem, grief, alcohol/drug issues, self-harm, eating disorders, identity issues • Relationship issues: roommate problems, boyfriend/girlfriend difficulties, marital issues, sexual concerns, pre-marriage • Academic: time management, procrastination, test anxiety

  6. What You Can Expect • Courteous and respectful reception by staff • Confidentiality within the limits of the law • Counseling records DO NOT become part of your academic record. • No charge for services • Appointment within 72 hours of your call • Referral when necessary

  7. Boyd Health Services In order to be successful in your academic and personal endeavors, you must remain healthy! The goal of Health Services is to keep you well. However, when you find yourself a little “under the weather,” we’re here for you.

  8. Clinic Services Provided • Acute and chronic illness care • Health screenings and education • Allergy injections and immunizations • Medication – prescription and over the counter • Labs • Family planning (birth control, pap screenings, STD checks)

  9. Costs • There is no additional cost to see a provider. • Medications are provided to the student at a significant discount. Sometimes free samples are available. • Lab work and vaccinations have additional costs. • You will be informed of any fees prior to the service. Fees are billed to your APSU account. We do not file insurance.
